KRAG Rifles

Since I recently purchased a new rifle chambered in 30-40 Krag (Winchester 1885 Trapper), I'm kind of interested in getting the real deal. And since I've scrounged up supplies to reload this cartridge, it only makes sense.

Granted, this one is really low on my list of acquisitions or 'wants', but it's something I will be considering down the road.

What kind of prices am I looking at for one of these? I see gunbroker listings all over the map on everything from Sporterized rifles (which I would actually consider if the price was right), to pristine examples going for quite a bit of cash.

To get a better feel for Krag pricing, you need to use the advanced function on gunbroker and search for completed auctions. Depending on condition, you should expect to pay $600-800 for a nice condition Krag rifle with a good bore.

Carbines are going to cost quite a bit more and you need to educate yourself on them because a great many rifles were cut down into carbines in past years and there are a ton of the cut-downs out there.

Last year I picked up a very nice 1898 rifle for $700 at the Big Reno gun show. Not the cheapest one out there, but the one I got has near perfect wood and a mint bore.

One of my "grail guns" would be a Krag Carbine that nobody knows is actually a carbine.

So many cut downs out there that somebody, somewhere is bound to be selling a mostly intact carbine and just assuming it is a sporter.

I actually found one once in an LGS. Nothing was permanently altered, although so many original parts were missing that it would have cost me more to gather all the original parts than it would have been to just buy a carbine.

My son bought this one in Anchorage when he was stationed there. I think he paid around $1K for it. Its an M1896 and is surprisingly accurate. It also has one of the smoothest bolts I've ever worked.

Check gunbroker a lot. Click on the links with no pictures on the main screen. Sometimes buyers don't want to pay the added fee. I found one on there for about 380 it was a cut down rifle but it is in amazing condition and shoots great.

Speaking of Krag rifles .I'm watching old runs of Hogan's Heroes and Schultz is always carrying a Krag.

A non sporterized Krag will run somewhere between $800.00 to $900.00. The one I bought last year was $825.00 if I remember correctly. I bought one that had been turned into a carbine (cutoff barrel & different front sight for $350.00 earlier in the year.

I like the cartridge though, I have only loaded it with 150gr Sierra FMJ Boat Tails thus far with the starting load of IMR 4895, but it was surprisingly soft shooting even in the tiny Falling Block Winchester Trapper rifle that I have. I loaded up some 110gn Sierra M1 Carbine bullets for the next test, but I would put the recoil with the 150's on par with my Model 94. Maybe slightly north, but not much.

For those Krag fans who want something really different, how about an original Danish Krag with rare correct original sling (rifle is probably a WW2 bring-back from Germany) for $600 + shipping?

Compared to other military bolt guns, US Krags are very expensive. Double what an average shooter of anything else would be. Unless you're comparing to Mosins, then it's at least 4X.

A lot of guys just want them really bad.
