I hear what you're saying OP, many years ago I broke my right collar bone and separated my shoulder. It healed slightly off, so that shoulders geometry is kind of messed up now and prone to issues.

I use one of these shirts, with a hard recoil pad inserted. It does the trick with my Garand, but the 03A3 still has quite a bit of kick to it. http://www.chuckhawks.com/evo-shield_shirt.htm

The shoulder, coupled with losing the tip of my right index finger a couple years ago has made things a little challenging, but nothing I can't handle. I can still hit a mansized target out at 300 yards. I need to get out to even longer distances, but time and commitments have kept me from attending any milsurp matches as of yet.

I'm going to just straight out tell you to learn how to properly shoulder and fire a long gun. Are you on the small or larger side? Maybe the guns just don't fit you properly? But, I'm willing to be it has more to do with your shouldering and shooting techniques than anything else. Besides, if the LOPs are already too long for you, a slip on recoil pad will just make them longer. Which, in turn, will not allow you to shoulder properly and will increase the perceived recoil.

Doped up Chinese at distance with thick clothing? Yea, I wouldn't want a carbine either. I doubt that the round would bounce off, but not a lot of knock down power either.
I think this tale arose because jumpy soldiers were firing M-2's in full automatic and all but the first round were skyward bound and missing the enemy. It may have been the first American assault rifle but it stunk in terms of control in full automatic.
