OP, I say go for it. I have one I found for a song back in the 90s and I love it. They are not as well known as some C&R guns but the machining and workmanship are excellent and they shoot quite well. Here's mine (the front of the slide isn't discolored - I just didn't get the lighting right when I snapped this pic):

Very nice! $400 is pretty good, though I would inspect it carefully for pitting or broken parts.

Guys, I went back to the store today, it's Chile contract with crest intact but serials on slide don't match frame and couldn't check serial on barrel. It's in good condition.

          Shall I pass?

              Personally I'd pass.

Agreed. If it was a 9mm Luger conversion I'd buy it as a mismatched shooter to enjoy a historical and obscure gun like that. When buying an oddity for collection/non or rare shooting purposes I personally want the gun as original as possible.

Stuff like mismatched WW2 1911's and Lugers still retain a significant amount of their value because, well, they're 1911's and Lugers but you can shoot them regularly.

Obscure stuff like the pistol in question draw almost all of their potential value from condition and matching parts.
                  C&R nut.

I'd pass as well, you can get a nice, matching Austrian military one for ~$400 eventually. They are more common but the majority were actually used in WWI, pretty cool history.

I'd rather have one of those than a mismatched Chilean
