Some pretty prompt service from the CA DOJ

My COE renewal was sent in late August, and I see that the DOJ cashed my check in right away. However I did not receive the renewal in the mail, and I patiently waited, thinking maybe they were behind schedule on getting them out. At least that's what they say when you call the CA DOJ Bureau of Firearms hotline and get their recording.

Last week I called and left a message, and to my surprise someone got back to me within a day. They said they would mail out another copy.

Unfortunately it's been another week, and still nothing in the mail. I made sure they knew my address when I talked to the clerk last week.

So this morning I left a message on their website's automatic message page. I said all I need is some sort of copy, it could be a PDF file emailed to me, or a fax. Surprisingly, someone called me back this afternoon, and they actually faxed me my COE renewal.

So while it was a bummer that I didn't get it in the mail, I still got it at the end, and the DOJ does reply rather promptly.

I've needed something from them promptly a couple of times. I just called and if i got the automated system hung up and called again. Someone always ended up answering after a handful of times and got me what i needed.

My experience is they're very slow with their paperwork pile but if there's an issue you can get ahold of somebody who can definitely solve problems, especially if it's clear it's not your fault. (I had a transmission issue on my LiveScan.)

Could be worse.

I had to dig around the CA DOJ website, but I found a number you can call to check the status of a COE background check. the number is 1-916-227-2300. Call and listen to the instructions. Punch in your ATI number and your birthdate and the system checks the status of your background check. I sent my FFL03 app and did the livescan and sent COE app in on 9-11-2015. ATF billed my credit card about 4 days later and just yesterday I called the DOJ and my COE background check is still "in process"...

They need to get this done, there is things to get...

I completed my livescan and had it on it's way after classic announced their m39 batch. Just for the CoE in the mail today. Faster than I expected, but slow enough to save me from buying from their bunk batch.

My initial COE turn around time was one month, but that was last year. It seems like they are swamped this year if it's taking two months to do initial COEs.

Also, guess what I found in the snail mail yesterday? My COE renewal. hahah. I guess I didn't need them to fax it to me after all, but it was nice of them to do so.

Got a Tokarev incoming to my FFL, I do feel somewhat nice in that I don't have to wait the silly 10 days for that gun.

In regards to my C&R, I ended up emailing ATF. This is the reply I received:

"Good morning.

Thank you for contacting the ATF Federal Firearms Licensing Center.

Our records indicate that your application was received on September 2, 2015.* ATF has 60 days from the receipt of a properly executed application to approve or deny the application."

Hopefully I won't have to wait the full 60 days for it.
