    First Mosin stock refinish

So I have a beat up Big 5 special that I've thought about refinishing the stock on for a fun project. Let me know what you guys think so far.

    Before

    Striped

    First coat of linseed oil.

So far I'm pretty happy with it. We'll see how it looks after a couple coats.

    What do you guys think?

How many coats would you guys recommend? I'm just running it on with a lint free rag

I only refinished one pre bubba'd stock, so my experience is limited. My Grandfather is a long time wood worker and gun enthusiast- he told me to apply a coat every day for a week, one coat a month for a year and one coat a year after that, I thought that was excessive, but he said "you'll know when to stop when the wood stops sucking the oil in". Let each coat soak/dry for 30 minutes and buff/wipe excess with a cotton towel. Also, he told me to rub the oil into the wood with the palm of my hand vigorously until it started to get fairly warm from pressure and friction.

I did it about 6 months ago, it came out fantastic. The stock I was working on was very dry and kept soaking in the oil with every subsequent coat.

Again, my experience is limited and I was following some old-timer instruction but I'm very pleased with it.

          Looking good so far!

The more the better, I say at least 4 coats. BLO takes a long time to dry so you would be at it for a couple of days. It wouldnt hurt to lightly rub down stock with xxxx steel wool when BLO dries before applying next coat...

Stock will look good when you are done...

81turbota, I am not sure using your palm to rub BLO in wood is such a good idea. I just read the warning on the can I have here and it does say to wash on contact with skin and get medical help if irritation presist...

I read that too, but it was using easy off to get the shellac off so I already had gloves on. Works REALLY well.

I'm not surprised! Maybe his experience is with pure linseed oil or containers without warning labels. The old man has old cans of MEK he keeps around to degrease various things.

                        You didn't even invite me!

Stock looks good. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product.

remove the two bands that secure the barrel bands and the action threw bolt, carefully. you already decided to refinish it so do it right. I have removed them maybe 10 times without a problem. Just be careful. Otherwise the old shellac and cosmo will keep it from coming out as nice as you would like.
                            Have fun .
I have used almost every finish imaginable and i like Amber shellac. mini wax and Linseed oil on mosins.
Now i just clean the cosmo off and enjoy tham as is.

This is very much for the experience. The stock is far from anything special so I figured I'd I really hated it I could track down another one haha. Not sure I'm comfortable removing that hardware but I'll look into it.
