Savage 99

I would call the Winchester 94 30-30 the quintessential American deer rifle not the Savage 99. I do like that the design can take spitzer bullets. Rotary magazines are neat.

San jose gun trader had one not too long ago but I don't think it's there anymore at least I did not see it on his calguns vendor thread.
They the kind of small family operated that would gladly keep an eye out you if you just mention it. So send him an email or make a phone call.
not too long ago they opened a new brick and mortar store from the home based FFL that they were.

I've seen them in Hawaii and its featured in one of my favorite audio books. A post apocalyptic tale "the dog star".

correction the title of the book is the "dog stars" by Peter Heller. (If you're actually a pilot because of your cousins name that's what I believe)
you would really like the book because 40% about it is describing his love for flying and his old plane that keeps them alive.

I have it on one of my phones on the "audible" audiobook app.
its read by Mark Deakins and is very relaxing, yet entertaining to listen to even though its post apocalyptic.

My friend has a model 99 in 303 savage . Its a cool rifle , but not easy to find ammo...and if you do its very expensive. He had dies and some custom brass so I offered to reload some rounds for him...they shot very well, and we both like the rifle a lot...its an interesting design. Rotary magazine does let you shoot spitzer bullets, but they have to be close to 110 -120 grains in that caliber or they wont fit in the magazine.

FYI the 99"C" model has a detachable box magazine in lieu of the internal rotary mag. I've been looking for a 99"C" in 308 for awhile now. I checked the selling prices of the "C" model on Gunbroker in June and the average selling price was around $580

The mags for some of the detachable magazine models can be hard to find and expensive too.

A very California consideration: l couldn't get lead-free ammo to feed in my 99 (.300Sav).

Old-school ammo with round-nose soft/flat-point bullets fed just fine, and I loved the rifle, but loads with Hornady GMX or Barnes TSX (which are both ogive-profile bullets with realtively long, sharp tips) it simply wouldn't function as designed, even though I played around with COAL and "tuning" the mag...

Ive owned three Savage 99's. Two in 308 Win. and a beautiful 1920's .250 takedown.

I couldn't get any of them to shoot to my liking, under 2MOA.

I sold them all and bought a Browning BLR 81 in .358 Win. that shoots 1.5 MOA or sometimes, better.

I never regretted selling the Savages.

The Savage 99 (especially the older ones) can be very nice rifles as long as you are happy with the way they shoot. I just didn't have any luck with the three I had. I tried hard, with a variety of factory and hand loaded ammo for the two 308's, but it just didn't work out.

2 MOA was about right back in the day.

My grandfather spent much of the 50's and 60's deer hunting with a Remington 740. He was pretty successful, never missed a deer he took a shot at.

He has long, long since hung up his hobby. I have bench shot that rifle with tons of factory loads and my own handloads. Near 2 MOA is the best that rifle can do. And old timers like my grandfather consider that accurate.
"Minute of deer" to him was good enough......I imagine that was the prevailing attitude back then.

That is pretty good considering the 25-35 is one of the rarest chambering's available for the 1899 and 99. They are a hell of gun, IMO!

My dad's family used Savage 99s for many years and they were suitably accurate for popping Mule Deer on the go in the Central Coast shrub lands. It was either them or 94 Winchesters in 30-30 which are comparable.

I didn't realize 25-35 is a scarce chambering I think I have a barrel for one in 25-35 as I have no use for it I need to list it up on eBay or Gunbroker eventually.
