Looks like an ejection port on a Mark I 1903 Springfield. If so, not a bubba, but the framework for the ever sought after, yet rarely available (and expensive) Pedersen (SP) device.
Next to me in the blackness lay my oiled blue steel beauty. The greatest Christmas gift I had ever received, or would ever receive. Gradually, I drifted off to sleep, pringing ducks on the wing and getting off spectacular hip shots.

I suppose the M1903 Mk 1 Pedersen ejection port also can act as a gas vent hole in case of a case rupture in the chamber.

mls343 beat me to it. Looks like the ejection port on a 1903 Mark I.

The correct stock has a relief cut in it, as well, beneath the ejection port.

I always forget the name of the Pedersen device. I DO however, know what one looks like. Plenty of pics on the net.

At least I will know what one looks like if I ever see it on the top of a junkpile in some old man's garage. I will then promptly remove my left nut and offer it up in exchange.

Figured I wouldn't fool anyone, but it was worth a try.

This one obviously went through the refurb process, but still has some older parts, like the milled floorplate, straight blued bolt and non-serrated trigger.

Wood is a bit beat-up, but the metal is fantastic.

Wow, I did not know about these. For anyone as clueless as me, here is a nice article on the subject. http://www.guns.com/2013/06/22/peris...dersen-device/

You're missing that $20,000 part. If you find one let me know I will give you $10 for it.

Well at least you have the rifle, so in case you ever find a Pederson device you'll be good to go!
