If you had a chance to mod a rifle (aka bubb-ing) what would it be?

Got a Tula hex 91/30 I've pieced together from a barreled action, found an unissued sniper bolt still in cosmo, and a repro PE mount and scope. Haven't had time for it either.
This is the only one I'd want to have in my collection - thought about doing it to a nicer looking K98 RC a couple of times, would be fun to shoot.

Many would find this absurd but they can wax a sock. I want to mod a Scout M1A, a full size battle rifle, to chamber 8mm. Don't ask me why. I just do.

          a M1917.

          - sell the GI barrel and wood to fund the project.

          - grind off the ears on my bench grinder. drill and tap it myself.

-home parkerize the receiver. install stainless Kreiger barrel in .270 Wby.

-polish the bolt, but leave it C-O-C.

-fit a partially inletted Boyds sporter stock. hand checker and varnish same.

          sounds delicious.

Here is the stock, with a RC K98 barreled action in it:

I am still on the fence about which action to mount it on. I have a Russian Capture AR 42 (in the photo) that shoots pretty well with handloads, but fails both a GO and NOGO headspace guage, or a Yugo rework. I am still trying to decide if the Yugo shoots well enough. Tried some handloads and got it down to about 2.5" at 100 using Hornady match bullets, but I really think there is more there.

Still want to play with the stock fit a little bit more. I am going to go back over the bedding info here, and the instructions in this thread. I may even try the old Mosin trick of wrapping the barrel under the handguard with felt, I expect it can't hurt.
Tom, the trick is to bed the receiver, float the barrel from stock and guard, then float the barrel from the bands. Do it to both, then see which one shoots better.

I've got a M1917 take off barrel I threaded to a 98K action. Done up old school with double set triggers, Bueller safety, Stith rings and mounts, with a Stith/Kollmorgan 6x fine cross hair. If you can see it, you can hit it. Don't under estimate that M1917 barrel.

                  A modern rifle. I'd Bubba a modern rifle like a Rem 700, Savage, or (non-collector) Winchester 70.

Alternately, I'd mod a Mosin by purchasing a spare bolt handle and modding that into a turned-down bolt handle. Then I'd put a Boyd's riflestock on it. After that would be a Jmeck wrap-around scope mount and a decent optic (e. g. Redfield, or perhaps a Zeiss Conquest since they're affordable now). All of these mods are reversible.

Why a Mosin? Because you can still get 'em for under $200.

I built this monstrosity out of Garand and BM59 parts one day when I was sick and stuck in the house. The good thing is that nothing is permanent.

I have already done it to a 91/30. I cut down and 11 degree crowned the barrel. Removed the rear sight base and installed a BKL ring set with a Nikon LER scope.
Had the bolt modded by Max Shepherd.
                      Installed Timney trigger.
Ordered up a Richard's Microfit laminate stock and got almost done with fitting it before I had to out the project on hold. It is still waiting to be finished.

All this was started before I knew about not "Bubbaing" milsurps. I wouldn't do it again.

But you can use a scout scope and a sporter stock and have no permanent alterations. I've done just that for both a K98k and a Swede M1938. Temporary and reversible. Just curious what you have in mind. Some of the old sporters were gorgeous.

What with the price of Enfield Jungle Carbines, I wish I'd picked up one of those $100 mismatched No 4's on the market here 10 years ago. (But at the time I had 2 nice SMLE's.) Cut down the barrel and put one of those Jungle Carbine conversion kits on it. And a real recoil pad.

I'd handload 125-grain, flat-base bullets (intended for 7.62X39) over a reduced load of IMR 4895. Then I could enjoy shooting it a lot. It would be a blast.

                        Regards,

2761377 got me thinking. What would something like that run anyways?

M1917 would be my only choice, now it is even more tempting...

I couldn't bring myself to do any permanent mods to a C&R rifle. Now if found one in good condition that already had the dirty work done to it, then mounting a good scope and possibly a new sporter stock could be worthwhile. I've seen some magnificent examples of sporters done back in the day that look great and might be worth mimicking.

My hex Mosin Nagant stock cracking, so I'm thinking about installing an ATI stock on it to bring it into the 21st century.
