How's the bore? As long as that's in good shape you did fine.

Bore looks pretty good. The crown is slightly sketchy but mostly looks ok.

So - I heated the cosmoline out of it, then scrubbed the wood with linseed oil. The buttstock is coming up blonde, as well as the upper handguards, but the lower handguard is pretty rough and black - grain is a little raised. Hmmm. Maybe 0000 bronze wool will fix that.

I'll try the garbage bag trick tomorrow, maybe.

Nice looking rifle! I didn't do anything to mine other than clean it off when I got it. Then rub blo or teak oil on it once in awhile over the years. My wife got it for me back in the 90s. Looks pretty much the same as the day I got it. There's a pic of it in this thread, post#3. It's Irish contract too. http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s....php?t=1098920

The Irish contract is an enormous joke. Didn't happen didn't exist. Nice rifles in any event from that ser # prefix range. You did well.

                  Jack,

Saw this #4mk2 at the Collins Barracks museum in Dublin Ireland earlier this month along with some other #4mk2s. Looks like some of them made it to the auld sod

Looks like you did well, the No.4 Mk2 is the pinnacle of the design. Do you have some surplus ammo to test it out? Prvi ammo uses boat tail bullets and my Enfields like flat based bullets better and they generally like .312 bullets. YMMV

No ammo of any kind for it yet. Was going to get some ppu, so j can reload maybe.

If you do reload, the Lee neck sizing die is the way to go. Your brass will last a lot longer than if you FL resize. Midway has some Hornady 174 gr bullets on sale for 24.99/100. They are round nose but they work great.

Congrats on the purchase, looks like a good one. I came late to the Enfield game but I have come to appreciate the utility of the design. Except for the need for the FP removal tool, the entire design seems remarkably simple. I am sure they designed them to keep running in some of the austere environments the Brits found themselves in (i.e. Tunisia).

Sitting on a couple of Enfields and a pile of ammo, and it is just too damned hot to go to an outdoor range right now.

Looks like a good buy to me. Of course I'm not an expert. I just like nice old (and new) guns.

                            Sorry, not sorry.

I'm not sure if others have encountered this, but I bought a Mk1 online and when I received it the bore looked like a sewer pipe. I mean BAD. The seller had described the bore as "good" and shamalamed me as it was worse than poor. Since I couldn't return it I spent hours scrubbing and swabbing and got a decades of gunk out. When I finished I somehow ended up with a strong bore. sharp rifling, with just a bit of frost near the throat.

Naturally I was quite relieved. This rifle seemed quite resilient despite its obvious neglect. I also had to replace the ejector (easy) and find a magazine. Thankfully I was able to cycle dummy rounds through it dozens of times with no feeding problems so it looks to be back in fighting trim.

Surprisingly, the exterior curb appeal of the rifle is outstanding and it is cool that it says "US Property".

OP, your rifle looks great by the way too.
