    mystery Arisaka and French carbine

Mystery(to me) arisaka, or wtf did I just buy?

Found this in a Washington gun shop, marked as an arisaka. Has no mum, but a star. Metal buttplate. Weird low serial #

Arisaka looks like a type 38, but the star is new to me.

I wonder, did the Korean .30-06 conversions, or chinese 7.62x39 conversions hav any unusual markings?

Your Arisaka might be a School (training) rifle. Does it have Lands & grooves?

Similar Arisaka was discussed on GB a year or so ago. They had only guesses - your star appears more solid rather than 5 "V"s. http://forums.gunboards.com/showthre...e-Arisaka-T-99

I remember that thread, it is definitely a mystery. Jinsen, an unkown company subcontracting for Nagoya, and a completely unkown factory are the only factories that used a star. It's very unique and I would keep a hold of it, it's probably part of that Chinese / Japanese Eastern front we know very little about in general. 6 million Japanese troops squared off against 10 million? (unkown number) of Chinese troops from 1937-1945, including an amazing Japanese offensive in late 1944/ early 1945.

Low serial number , Star marking , twin vents looks more like it could be a Type 30 ( precursor to the "modern" Type 38), used by Russia

What Cartridge does she shoot ?

I'm not sure what it shoots yet. Bore is pretty rough and I don't have any cleaning equipment here so I can't even be sure it has rifling. It doesn't have the hooked safety or rear bolt release of the type 30...

No external extractor, both 99 and 38 have external extractors, I also do not see bolt lug raceway cuts either side so looks like a blank of low power (7.62x39mm?) gun with rear looking lug or just bolt handle.

That Arisaka is quite interesting, I was thinking maybe a Chinese capture? Vivelacolo can tell you everything you need to know about French guns. If he doesn't happen to post to this thread, send him a PM.

Just noticed the rear tang (one pc. receiver/) has what looks like casting voids/pitting so maybe cast receiver blank gun?

I'd say not, the Type 30 is a different receiver design. It had a completely different bolt and bolt release.

I looked at dozens of models and images in my books, no match. This includes all the type 30 and type 38 derivatives, different Manchu arsenals, Thai, Siamese, North Chinese, etc. Nothing! If Gunboards can't figure it out.......

Furthermore, Russia didn't scrub the receivers and stamp a star on them. It was Russia that received them, not the USSR.

Again, this is just a trainer meant to fire blanks. It's nothing special. The barrel will be smoothbore.

Most trainers don't even have locking lugs; they just use the bolt handle. They were just made to superficially look and feel like a real Arisaka.
                              It's a captured trainer?
