    Swedish Ljungman AG42B range report

Getting ready for the bi-monthly vintage semi-auto military rifle silhouette match this Sunday. I haven't shot this match this year and thought I better check the rifles my sons and I use (Swedish Ljungmans)

I took both of them to the Lincoln range today to see if they still shot ok with my reloads. I intended to fire five round groups, but got a flyer in each group, so I ended up shooting six round groups. Minus the flyer (I know, I know... not kosher) the groups were about 1.6" @ 100 yards.

...a fool and his money were lucky to get together in the first place...

So.... jealous... Great rifle bud, I wish I had gotten one years ago when they were going for way less than they are really worth.

No fair, your cheating using those rifles. Swedes dominate the bolt guns and now your ruining semis!

Nice shooting Mustang. Ive had the pleasure of firing one that knucklehead brought to one of the C&R shoots. They are nice rifles and quite interesting too.

The Swedes dominated when they were using aftermarket sight adjusters. Now that they have to play fair, they are rarely in the top 3. I just looked at the last 3 months results and it's either a Garand or an 03 dominating

I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.

Brian, whats going on with the swede aftermarket sight rules/changes? I have not been seriously shooting the matches the past 6 months and am thinking of going this Sunday to the gas gun match.

The main change was no vasteras sight adjusters on the M96, since they are not original issue. I believe they are still allowed on a M38 though, although those are numbered differently. Here is one of my M96s with a vasteras:

              Also, no shims allowed!

Frank, some months ago rules about sights on military rifles were tightened. Sights on "in class" rifles have to be original military sights. This mainly affected the Swedish rifles equipped with the "Vasteras type" fine rear sight adjusters. The only rifles they are now allowed on are the 96/38 rifles, cut down from M96 rifles, with the original rear (non-T marked) sight.

Regarding the Swedish Mauser Vasteras sight, I have used one and it definitely gave an advantage. If I had to choose a bone stock rifle to compete with, it would be the Finnish M39, it has very fine graduations on it's leaf sight and a windage adjustable front sight. I have scored almost as well with it as the M96. The 6.5 mm bullets handle the wind better than the .310" Mosin bullets, but you don't ring Rams as often with a heavy .30 cal. bullet.

Can't disagree with this. I've shot this match with the M39 and the rear sight is very finely adjustable. Same with the M28/30. I've often wondered what the intermediate sight stop increments are on the M39 and figure it maybe as little as 25 yards.

The Vasteras rear sight insert is still allowable on the M38 that does not have the "T" marked rear sight leaf, but I believe the shorter barrel and its affect on the velocity of the bullet, could mean even more Ram "ringers".

The problem with the M39 sight and any front hinged leaf sight, is that the closer the slider is to the hinge pin, the greater the total sight elevation. I measured mine for the complete travel and found that the first few notches were 1/3 MOA, but the last were 1.5 MOA. It worked out that one setting was low on the Turkeys, the next was over the top. I shot my best score with that rifle with 180 gr. soft point Sierras, I switched to Matchkings for greater accuracy, but the load left me with the Turkey hole. I could go back to soft points or workup another Matchking load, but you would have to verify that it didn't leave a hole somewhere else. Down here at Pala I can still use the Vasteras, - infinitely adjustable elevation with a high BC bullet are tough combination to beat.
