Collector ammunition

Just curious if there is a forum concerning older/collector ammo? I have a bunch of stuff that might have some collector value but when I advertise it on Calguns I just get a bunch of "flippers" that want to hustle a buck...nothing wrong with free enterprise but I have no idea of the value..many thanks.

In fairness to members at Calguns - the guys at IAA will also try to get a good deal and are quite possibly even tougher negotiators.

They do know a lot about the subject though.

Collectable ammo prices can run the entire spectrum.

I collect one caliber of WW2 cartridge, and have paid from $1 a round to $150 per round - so researching values and trying to determine a market can be a frustrating endeavor.

Why not post what you have and ask for values, if you're really not in the mood to do any research?

I didn't want to seem too pushy and not unwilling to do research but on G/B for example the prices on Black Talon jump from about $25 a box to some folks asking over $100 for the same thing.....here's a bit of info on what I have...first ,not shown are 2 boxes (full and in great condition) of Winchester Black Talon...one is 9mm and one is .40...boxes and ammo are very clean and un damaged.

Here is a picture of what I have...there is a red and white box of 38 special 110 grain +P+ Federal LEO ammo..think this was called the "Treasury load"

one box (gold and black) of Federal 147 grain 38 special +p+ LEO only..think this was the ammo that replaced the 110 grain when they were trying to get a proper load for the LEO's and the FBI

one box of PMC 38 special 158 grain fMJ (think this is old packaging ...camo box .... of a modern product from PMC.

One box of Remington 38 special"kleenbore" (green box) of 158 grain lead projectiles...

2 boxes of M41 military 38 special fmj.

Don't know if any of it has much value...I think the Black Talon is collectible and perhaps the other may have value to someone besides just being a shooter...hope I didn't "intrude" into the forum..thanks

Ignore asking prices on Gunbroker. Search for completed listings, and look for lots that actually sold. You can't base value on some nimrod relisting the same box of ammo again and again for $100, which ends with no bids.

I had a coffee can full of 40s and earlier vintage cartridges that I finally gave away. No one at all was interested in any of them. It was a shame because there was a bunch of WW1 German and U.S. rounds, a USGI .45-70 round...all sorts of stuff.

I knew a man who was a collector of old collectible ammunition and even empty ammunition boxes.
(I guess this ammo box collecting is a hobby in lots of places in the world where you can't get guns, what kind of like stamp collecting.)

I believe he claimed to have one of the largest collections of old .22 rimfire ammo in California, and I also believe he was talking the very old stuff that came out when the early first generation Smith and Wesson .22 rimfire revolvers hit the scene. (can you imagine what the ammo boxes look like during the Civil War time frame?)

his one tip to me was...

if it has a warning label on the box it's not really that old for very valuable in the eyes of a collector.

some boxes with nice artwork on them of course can fetch extra dollars to the right collector.

and of course the more modern stuff like you have can be worth a buck or two,
but again to the right collector.

Nothing there really has much collector value.... The PMC is just ammo.. The older Remington green box would bring only a slight premium over new ammo. The two other boxes of LEO only +P+ might bring a bit of a premium to a collector who collects LEO only ammo...

If you get over $150 for the lot you will be doing well

Opos - that is modern ammo - regrettably I know next to nothing about it's collecting value.
I'd start the bidding at $1 a round on GB and see where it went from there - if the auction cycles and it hasn't been bid on you drop your price incrementally - I do this all the time when I am selling something that I am unsure of and have the time.

Sealocan - I collect ammo, boxes, and even paper literature pertaining to the 8mm Kurz round, and the firearms that used it - it has less to do with not being able to own the firearms, I do own the firearms, than it has to do with some kind of sick obsessiveness

I believe that's how my acquaintance explained it to me.
That he gets a lot of sales & trades from people in Europe in countries where restrictions on firearms are high.
I don't know where else I would have got that impression because it's something I've never really looked into.

whatever floats your boat.you're not hurting anyone and infact some of the artwork on some older boxes I've seen looked very cool to me.

just save the live ammo for me.

Ha - you cannot insult me anymore than I insulted myself after spending good dollars on a sealed box of 15 Kurz rounds dated 1943.
(I will not give a dollar figure except to say, it was less than a grand.)
I banned myself from gun broker and the WAF and Gunboards classifieds for a month -

The laws in England are just as bad for ammo collecting as they are for firearms, and they have some component clauses that will get you in trouble with deactivated ammo, too.

I use GB as more of a guideline, not so much of what sellers list it at but more of what I see it sell for.
For myself I collect soviet calibers so if you have anything in those I would be interest, especially if it's East German, and I also applaud you for not wanting to sell to flippers.

Many thanks to everyone that weighed in on this..been very helpful...I think I got some ammo to give to a buddy or to shoot up for the brass..I'll just advertise the black talon for a bit more than going rates for s/d ammo and let it go at that..I load all my handgun loads and don't want to mess with other loadings and poi issues. Been shooting the same handloads for a long time and they work for me...

Again I do appreciate all the comments..like anything else old often just means old (sort of like me) and nothing special..
