91/30 from Big 5

Hi All,

You guys have been so incredibly helpful every time i have a question so here goes again.

I just bought 2 91/30's from big 5 this morning and wil be picking them up soon. They cosmetically look real real good.

Now what should be my next step ? I asume i shouldnt just take them out to the range but clean and check them out ?

What exactly should i do any suggestions ?

Learn how to take apart the bolt,then give it a good cleaning(take it completely apart),buy/order some good milsurp ammo,get 144 Grain if you can,then go shoot it.

Hope it doesn't have much cosmo in/on it,i've heard that is kinda annoying to clean out/off,fortunatly mine didn't have any on it,so I managed to just have to do a more normal cleaning.

How much did you pay for it?

Paid $79.99 for mine at big 5.

Went this morn, ended up getting a $99 one with a laminated stock. I thought they opened at 5:30 but i guess my store opened earlier, and the best one they had was already sold.

So what's the best way to get the cosmoline stuff off the wood? After handling it my hands were all gunked up too.

not to change the subject but the store in Morgan hill had a sks they wanted 399 for which looked real good but the guy said it may go on sale soon so i gave him my number to call me if it does.

Back to the 91/30's How do you get them clean and ready to shoot anything to look for or do first ????

Like jedi said, go online and get a manual for the bolt. Take it apart completely and clean it. Wipe any excess oil/cosmo off the magazine parts too. Then scrub the crap out of the inside of the barrel.

After you put it all back together, you would be able to take it out to shoot.

What about cleaning cosmo out of the chamber? Isn't that an often overlooked spot that can lead to a sticky bolt? Just asking 'cause I haven't gotten around to decosmoing mine yet.

I questioned this same thing recently with an SKS. Oh NOES! Thought I'd have to use some SUPER cleaning chemicals. Seriously though. I just gave it a HOT shower. As hot as the water got and it melted away mostly. Had to wipe some of it of with a towel when the water started cooling down. Easy as Pie.

Same goes for all the metal parts too.

Full Disclosure: My SKS had little to no sealant on it. It was basically bare wood with cosmo. Due to this my SKS stock did turn a little gray. This can be fixed with application of Tung Oil and then a sealant on top of that aint a bad idea but not needed.

yeah IMHO I would never use water/shower, but another way to get it all out is wrap it up in a towel then a big black trash bag and set it out in the back yard on a sunny day, or in the trunk of yoour car for a while, then just whipe it all away and then clean clean clean, just like a normal rifle, this way you wount have to redo the wood like Jlh98511 had to lol,
and i have never had sticky botl lol

No problem man lol i could see this guy trying it and then being all pissed because he has no finish on his mosin lol.... rember to post pics of your sks, i want to see if i should redo my enfield...lol

On a Mosin it SHOULD not be an issue. I bathed one of mine and it changed nothing except removing the mud it fell in. OOPS! They have a pretty nice finish on them.

My Yugo stock is clearly a replacement stock. #'s don't match. Handguard is way different and much more abused. I don't even know why there was cosmo on it I'm thinking they replaced it then cosmoed the whole thing. I'll try to post before and afters.
