Mosin 91/30 issue

Went shooting yesterday at my local Socal range. There was a father & son next to us that had a modified Hex. Stock, trigger, etc.They asked if I wanted to try it compared to my stock 91/30. The first shot felt great, The trigger was very smooth.
The problem was the second shot. when I pulled the trigger I was hit in the face with a wave of heat & particles. I later saw the spent case which looked like it had a letter T in the side where it split. Has anybody heard of this happening? I wish I would have got a picture of the case & the lot # of the ammunition which I think was factory Hornaday, but I wasn't thinking too clearly at this point.
The only other thing is now I'm going to get some goggles because my glasses didn't keep a lot of the powder out of my eyes. I have a Dr appt later today to dig all the rest or the junk out.

You had case necks splitting, I've had Albanian brass and bulgarian HB brass do this to me.
Seems to be a common occurrence with certain surplus.
I forget what type has a T on it ATM might check the 7.62x54r ammo chart in a minute.

Edit: I did a quick look up, a T could be older russian.

No the case wasn't marked with a T it was what the crack looked like.

Well whatever your ammo was, that's where your problem is.
I am curious what ammo exactly you were using, if you get a chance read off the bottom of a cartridge

It wasn't mine, it was theirs, but I wasn't thinking clearly at this point so I didn't get a picture or case markings.

I'm sorry to hear this happened to you, and glad to hear you're alright. Whatever ammunition they used was the issue. Was the ammunition brass or steel cased?

I wish I knew what it was, I thought they said it was steel case Hornaday? but I was in a hurry to get to urgent care to get the crap out of my eyes.

Well that sucks that you got a face full of gas... it happens and the only good thing is you were wearing glasses and at least you still have your vision!

Hornady does make new 7.62X54r and it is steel cased. They call it their "Vintage Match" type, I haven't used any as I reload for most of my Mosins.

Dang, so glad you are ok. I shoot Mosins - have never had this happen but have heard about it a bunch. I always thought good shooting glasses would prevent any injury but I guess I was wrong. Makes me think of shooting with goggles! What kind of glasses were you wearing?

I was just wearing my prescription glasses. I'm definitely going to get some real good shooting glasses. Had to get 5 pieces removed from 1 eye & have to go back in a couple of days to get more taken out. That box in the previous post looked like the box of ammo. I've only used Privi or Red army Standard in my Mosin.

Holy smoke... 5 pieces of what? I have had case separations and blown primers before and it only sprayed grease from inside of the bolt on my glasses, not shrapnel. Could you identify any of the fragments or what kind of material it is?

I'm not sure what is was. When I go to get more removed I will ask.

It wasn't the primer because that was still in the case but I assume it was pieces of case.

I'd assume case head separation, but getting shrapnel would be extreme for that, wouldn't it?

Could it have possibly been unburnt powder particulate? Glad to hear you will be okay and hopefully your vision will be too. That's scary. Does sound like defective ammo, can't think of what else it could be. Could have been a pierced primer? Did you notice if the primer had a dimple or a hole?

The case that I saw was cracked & broken down by the primer It looked like a letter t about 1/8" from the bottom of the case.
