Going to give grandson his 1st rifle. Stevens Favorite, 22 cal, octagon barrel, great condition.
Wondering if there is any ammo that should be avoided for use in this rifle. Barrel is stamped .22 Long Rifle. High velocity rnds, minnie mags, etc be ok?
    Thanks for any info....Bill

Bill, you won't find any ammo that will hurt it. Mine does exceptionally well with High Speed Shorts, but I have to give the chamber a good scrubbing before I can shoot Long Rifles in it.
Teach him how to take it down and put it back together, making sure that every time does, he has the barrel "completely" seated into the receiver before he snugs it down.
Make sure he learns to seat the loaded round all the way in before he closes the action too. Great first gun for a .22!

I personally would try to stick to Standard Velocity at around 1050 FPS.

This was likely made before the advent of any High Velocity. Though Higher Velocity may or may not harm it in the long run. SV would be kinder to the the old gal.

You will also gain nothing from using High Velocity anyway. SV will be much more accurate also.
