    Remove crossbolt on SKS stock?

    Hi all,

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to remove the cross bolt on an SKS stock. Anyone have a link to a video or tutorial? Thanks.

Hollow ground screw driver on one side, two pin spanner on the other, or use the tips on a pair of snap ring pliers.
    Or one of these:

Any special reason you need to remove it?
If and when you do, take note the position the flat sits in, this is a recoil lug that the receiver has to seat against properly, or you risk cracking your stock.

I cannot think of any logical reason to remove it. It was never designed to be removed once installed.

So you can sand the hell out of the stock and make it purdy.

If the ends are sticking out far enough to hit with sand paper, bubba already beat you to it.

Those that know me know I am partial to the SKS platform, big time. I have never seen any sort of aftermarket "upgrades" or bubba-foonery that improved the performance of the rifle or increased its' value. The factory configured Simonov (all flavors) is battlefield accurate, 100% reliable with ANY decent ammo, low maintenance (really low), and just generally needs not to be dicked with whatsoever.

I don't mean to rail on the OP's rather innocuous question, the rant is sort of just in general to the SKS, which I love above all other milsurps. I have bought, sold, and traded a lot of them and I ended up with a handful of them which I am particularly fond of and have no plans to ever sell.

If you do decide to remove it, don't let the slotted side spin or move. It's indexed in the stock, only turn the 2 pin spanner nut.

I like others tried one of the gun show dust cover mounted scopes . After much work making the new cover fit tight enough to keep the scope stable i had to accept that the cheap scope was junk. instead of buying a better scope i just gave up on the project and decided a SKS is great as is.I did buy a nice YUGO a few years ago that the last owner installed a pep rear sight on it. I liked it and may install one on my trusty Chinese SKS. some day, maybe not. I can put it back in a snap.
I never considered messing with tactical stocks or removable mags. You have to look hard to find a better battle rifle than a SKS.

I forgot about the peep sights that mount where the dust cover retaining pin goes. Those are an improvement over the stock sights and seem to work well. They would make disassembly more of a PITA I'd think.

The Choate mount (drilled and tapped into the receiver) works quite well when installed correctly. Ejected casings do tend to bounce off the scope but it has not affected zero. With a 59/66 the gas can be turned off solving that problem.

the one i got on my 59/66a1 was a direct replacement for the original rear sight. I think this was popular in the 90s. clean replacement for the V sight. not mounted to the dust cover. So sight radius was not improved but it looked like it belonged on the gun. My 68 year old eyes like peep sights.

I don't know. I am tempted to install a folding stock onto one of my SKS (not on the ones you sold me, knowing you will hunt me down if I do ) just to say F U to the State.

what other semi-auto centerfire guns can you buy a folding stock for ? without triggering evil feature (BB)......or violate the 30" OAL rule.....
