I previously posted the challenges of getting a MS Model 1952 in 257 Roberts using my C & R license. Good news is the rifle is being shipped, bad news is - it's going to my dealer. Seems "Model 1952" on the receiver and DOM stamp of "53" wasn't quite convincing enough ....
The rifle is pristine so I've decided to not drill & tap for Redfield top mounts. However I do have a 1950s "old stock/new condition" Williams side mount. The rifle has a removable spacer between stock & receiver, so no alteration of the stock is required. I'm told the MS 1952 didn't come factory drilled/tapped for a side mount due to a variation in screw spacing of available side mounts such as G & H, Jaeger, Pachmayer.
Assuming this rifle isn't factory drilled & tapped on the side, what's the point of view on having it done now? Any screwholes on the side of the receiver will be out of sight if the mount is removed, but aftermarket modifications, seen or not, aren't original & lower the value. Were I to later sell it I'd be obligated to tell the buyer.
The Blue Book puts value at $2K with 35% added for the chambering, I paid less than half that due to the seller pricing this as an "after 1968 made" Steyr rather than the correct MS Model 1952.
