    Kinda Cool Garand Surplus

I'm sure many already know but I saw some pretty cool 30-06 surplus ammunition at Turners in HB. It comes in cardboard packets that are sealed and has all sorts of interesting stampings on it. I looked it up and its USGI surplus MK ammo that is all brass/copper and no steel and non corrosive and was made under contract for the US in Pakistan during the 1960's.

The rep there was kind enough to open one of the packets for me and we took a look at the ammo which was all intact and other than not being bright and shiny was corrosion free. The primers look to be sealed with some kind of black sealer.

Its going for 12.99 plus tax for 20 rounds which out the door comes out to 70 cents per round. I don't know if this is a good deal or not but it is kind of cool ammo so I picked up a few boxes even though I don't have a 30-06 rifle.

You can go online and have them ship it to you too.

Bought some for my '03 (don't have an M1). Been reading reviews that the recently imported stuff is pretty reliable. Giving it a shot

Treat it as corrosive and clean accordingly.

Why anyone would buy this questionable Berdan primed POF ammo when you can get brand new Boxer primed Prvi Partizan M1 Garand Ammo in a new ammo can, for about the same price, plus save the brass for reloading, is beyond me.

Is that stuff different from what Midway is selling?

I bought this can, but haven't fired any of it yet. It comes packed in en bloc clips and the reviews are mostly positive. I tend to trust Midway's descriptions, but who knows

Midway is selling the same stuff, it's Pakistani ammo too. I wouldn't shoot it in an M1, maybe a 1903 but if it's anything like the POF .303 surplus, the rounds may not fire. Treat it as corrosive and clean your rifle accordingly.

Got a box to shoot in my 03 for under $10. Took it to the desert with me last week... 20 rounds all went bang right on que. No issues. Went back for more, and they raised the price...manager at my local Turners is a friend, and dropped the price to <$10/box. I'll shoot 100 rounds next time out, but it seems to be "ok" ammo. WILL NOT shoot in my Garand!!!, but it's fine in the sporterized 03.

My gut says this ammo would probably run fine in a Garand or an 03. Internet horror stories are often overblown and dubiously sourced. But my American milsurps are expensive and nice. I don't shoot them a lot so when I do they get quality ammo.

If you own a garand/1903/1917 and dont reload i'm not sure what to tell you.
You can load nice, safe new ammo for less than 50 cents a round. You can make back your outlay for reloading equipment in less than 1000 rounds.
If you dont shoot that much buy the prvi or the american eagle garand ammo.
If 50 year old ammo from third world nations is your only option i'd say vaya con dios....

I think most problems are related to squib loads. If you ok with this then its ok. But if a second round tries to go after a squib you get a boom.

Update on this: Put 20 through my '03 yesterday without a hiccup. Accuracy wasn't incredible, but good enough. My rifle does 1.5-2 MOA with HXP and the POF was holding about 3 or so. I'd give it the OK for use in my M1.
