What's the general price for a type 99 with the mum intact? I was looking at one that was in really good shape (and had the monopod)and thought I was going to have it for around 500 but it ended up going for 1,600 or so! I have an offer for one that seems to be in fair to good shape (with mum and airplane sights but no monopod) for 450.00. It's not the best one I've seen but it might be due to not being shined up for the picture, it's really hard to tell online. Also, he says the bolt has no numbers. What do you think?

Most Arisakas I see are usually very beat up. And then there are the Last ditch ones that look beat up but that is how they were made. Followed by the bubba ones that grandpa made in to a hunting rifle. Pristine ones are rear and bring a high price.
A intact Mum is worth about $100 more depending on condition. Sometimes you can find one in good shape or just needs a little TLC with a crossed mum that is in $100 to $300 range. Remember that a intact Mum only means that it was captured before Japans surrender. And some of them may have been defaced all so by the soldier that captured it by Gen. McCarther orders.
My type 99 is beautiful and at $150 it was a bargain. But it was missing parts and had a defaced Mum. For $100 of parts I have a complete type 99 that shoots excellent.
My type 38 carbine looked like the kids played with it and left it in the back yard over the winter. For only $80 I brought it home and started cleaning it up. After steaming the dents out, a light sanding, dark stain and lacquer the stock looked presentable. Steel wool and cold blue brought the metal back. Then I invested in a main spring and reproduction sling and bolt cover and it would be at home in any reenactment.
So keep looking and see what you can find. A little TLC and you can have a Arisoka to be proud of. Parts can be found at Numrich gun parts and repro slings and parts at IMA and Museum Replicas.Comment
