    Question on M48 value

Found one for under $250; nice bore, nonmatching bolt. Stock in good shape, number matches receiver. Good deal?

Also, what problem areas should I look for?

They are sturdy, reliable guns and still quite affordable. $250 is a good price. Occasionally they might get sticky bolt, but that's about it. If intact and the bore is noce, I'd say do it.

Went back to look again. M48a, doesn't have the turn-down bolt. Some pitting around the crest. I'm leaning "pass," it just ain't speaking to me.

If it has a straight bolt then the bolt is from an M24/47. All M48s have a turn down bolt.

There are some really nice ones out there, find the right one for you

I got one of those Big 5 sale Mausers recently. I passed on the first example that I saw (not matching and rough stock) and went to another store. I was told that they had none but would have more in a week. I went back again and was shown two. The one I picked was an all matching M48BO. They had two and both were all matching. I asked the guy whether they usually had all serial numbers matching and he told me that they never do. Maybe he never checked. It wasn't like new condition but I am happy with it.

I thought Big 5 had gotten out of the C&R biz. I'll have to go look.

Of those I saw at Big 5, all were thoroughly infused with cosmoline. You are going to have to break them down and clean completely before use. The pin moved in slow motion as purchased when dry fired!

That's not cosmoline, that's the ghost of Marshal Tito making sure you're not flinching

I'll take an old warhorse bolt gun filled with cosmo over a cheap, disposable modern low end bolt gun with plastic parts all day long.

Excellent shooters even with worn bores if you change front sight to a post ($18 brownells), flute the firing pin (Speed up lock time) and tune up trigger (remove one coil), and handload seating bullets out to touch lands.

                            6mmintl,

Any thoughts on the Mojo peep sights for these rifles (http://www.mojosights.com/sample-page/mausers/)?

I bought an almost new/barely fired M48A from a Calgunner last year for $250.00. Shot it a few times and it shoots great but would always have problems with extracting cases, they would stay locked up to the bolt claw. Took it to a gunsmith, we took it apart and discovered that the extractor was too short?!?! Luckily he had one laying around, we replaced it and the gun will fling a case 20 feet now. During the repair process, I moved away from his repair bench and accidentally swept the M48A bolt off his bench. It happened to hit the floor at just the angle to actually snap off the rear 1" of the firing pin, which was weird since it only fell about two feet, but it was enough. Trying to find a replacement firing pin was tough, but finally found a new CNC'd firing pin on Gunbroker for $35.00. We put it back together but have not been able to shoot it to test out the new firing pin as all of my Yugo ammo is brass case steel core milsurp so have to wait until we get some rain to shoot that ammo.
