    C&R status after plating.

This is a simple question, I hope the answer is simple. I have a S&W Victory 38 that has been nickel plated. Is it still C&R?
I understand the collectible value is gone, but I don't know the legal status.

c&r status only changes if the configuration of the firearm is changed. Refinishing does not change the status.

        I'd double check that.

changing the finish type, vs. refinishing are not the same thing.

It is over 50 years old so it is a C&R

changing the finish is not changing the configuration of the fire arm. ATF isn't quite as daft as the CA DOJ, in which a different finish is considered a different model altogether. ATF C&R book doesn't specifically state the definition of "configuration", but there are quite a few c&r guns out there with new finishes that are still considered c&r, the chromed mosins from classic for instance.

Of course, there is no harm in confirming with ATF if OP so desires.

Based on the C&R FAQ's, I would argue, no.

What modifications can be made on C&R firearms without changing their C&R classification? a firearm must be in its original condition to be considered a C&R weapon.

I can't quote chapter and verse; but I researched it once since I don't like blued finishing... and I came away with the conclusion I couldn't change the finish type.

I am not sure "configuration" includes things like finishing? I always thought that referred to more functional components.

If a gun is reblued does it looks its C&R status? How often have you had a debate with a seller about whether or not "that old gun" was re-blued 20-30 years ago?
