New guy needs help with Remington Model 8

So this is my first post and i'm asking it here, since, although its not a milsurp it's old and was adopted by more than a few lawmen.

On a recent trip home i was going through my Dad's gun collection and came across a Remington Model 8. I started getting curious about and wasn't able to come up with much info just asking as it had originally been one of my Grandfather's guns that never got used much. I did learn after calling remington with the serial number that it was made in 1917, old but not incredibly old. I also learned that it was one of John M. Browning's designs that he sold the patents for. I took all the wood off and started to clean the reciever which required a very thorough teardown. i was able to get almost everything apart, (couldn't figure out how the bolt comes out though) in order to soak in CLP for a couple weeks until i get back there.

I was wondering if anyone has any sort of experience with this model and if so is it worth taking the barrel out of the barrel sleeve to check the spring inside? Does anyone have any good schematics or anything worth sharing?

    Thanks for any help.

I was warned by a gunsmith to not take a Remington 8 or 81 apart. You are already past that point! Your next step should probably be to take it to a gunsmith and let him proceed from there. Replacement parts including springs are available. I have an 81 in .300 Savage - a very accurate rifle but the felt recoil is a bit stiff probably due to the recoil operated action.

I recently landed on a Remington model 8/81 in 35 Remington in very good
condition- it is said to be softer shooting..the .300 Savage is even more
      rare..try this http://home.comcast.net/~parslowb/20...remington.html

Nikko, I hope this info helps with your project. I found it online a while back for my own Model 8 restoration.

            Ok, go here: http://vintagesemiautorifle.proboards105.com/index.cgi

It is basically a model 8 forum. They can answer just about any question you have about them. I have two model 81s, the later version of the gun. One in .300 Savage, the other in .35 Remington. It is a good design for its time, and they are fun to shoot. The recoil is a bit stiff because to the mechanics of the action, but not terrible. Also, you didn't mention what caliber it was in. .35 Rem can be had off the shelf at most gun stores. .30 and .32 Rem are available from a few custom makers, and the brass and supplies to reload them are not hard to find either. If it is in .25 Remington, DON'T SELL IT! They only command a bit of a premium, but they are nearly impossible to find for sale anywhere. You can occassionally find brass, but you can also make it out of 30 or 32 Rem brass, or that new-fangled 6.8 SPC, which is, oddly enough, based on .25 Rem necked up to .270 caliber. As for removing the barrel from the shroud, it is fairly easy, but you need a special tool to do it. The guys on the other forum can walk you through that. You will probably only need to do it once to check on the condition of the spring, and spray it with rem oil or other gun oil. I didn't even bother with my .35. They are chunky guns, but they are well build, and can take lots of abuse.

Thanks a lot guys! For this being my first post/question i appreciate all the help. the tech diagrams will help a lot was will the two links.

This particular model 8 is chambered for .32. Probably hasn't been shot or cleaned in at least 40 years. Couldn't ever sell based on the history behind it and how my Grandfather got it. Luckily my Dad got it after him because my Uncle and one of my aunts sold the guns they got from the Grandfather. Sad, Sad, Sad.

As far as being warned not to take it apart, i'm not sure if that would have made a difference. I love to take things apart, esp. guns to figure out how they work and how to deal with/anticipate malfunctions and such. Thankfully my job has sent me to schools that taught the basics of detailed disassembly so most of the time i can get the stuff back together. Once its back together and cleaned i'll post pictures and let ya'll know how it shoots after such a long hibernation.

Don't worry about getting it apart or back together. They are complicated little beasts, but not as bad as some other guns. The instructions he posted should get you through it. If not, one of the guys on that other forum can. .32 Remington is a ballistic clone for .32 Win Special. You can use the load data from the two of them interchangeably. It is basically in the same class as .30-30 in terms of power. And you can use spitzer bullets in it, which is a plus. Assuming you can find .32 spitzer bullets, that is.
