i just purchased a svt40, fn49 and a enfield mk4 and will pick them up in 10 days. i have a ? on what surplus ammo would be good to shoot with the svt. the fn is not an issue and neither is the enfield. i have alot of the surplus ammo for my mosin but with it being corrosive and sometimes loose bullets, i was unsure of that stuff. and i will post pics of all 3 when i pick them up along with a pic of the reciept so you can be amazed.

Congrats on the purchases. I have all three of those, and so far the FN49 is my favorite.
Many people don't like shooting corrosive surplus ammo in semi-automatics, but I haven't had any problems. Just make sure you clean it good afterwards, including the gas system, and you should be okay.
I have some Czech silver tip (metal case), and I think Yugo brass cased stuff I shoot in the SVT40 (you can see both in the picture below). Both work fine, but I think the metal case works a little better.
Here's my SVT40:

Each SVT-40 is a little different, but the usual recommendation for ammunition out of it is to stick with the "light ball" variety of 7.62x54R; no 180 grain hungarian silvertip. The gas cylinder needs to be set at the correct setting for the spent casings to eject. You will have to experiment with moving the setting anywhere from 1.3 onwards to get it to cycle correct. Use the lowest setting that will make it eject smoothly.
In regards to the quality of the individual rifle rounds you fire out of it, be SURE to NOT shoot anything that has corrosion on the case head, has dents in the neck, etc. My SVT-40 loves to cause case head seperations, leaving me with half of a case of 7.62x54R stuck in the chamber as the bolt ripped the other half out.
You will probably need to order the right tool (click here) in order to take down your SVT-40 without marring the gas system (as well as to turn the adjustment). If you shoot your surplus ammunition out of it, you have to clean the barrel and gas system ASAP.Last edited by Dr. Peter Venkman; 11-15-2008, 9:58 PM.sigpic

+1 on the Silvertip Czech ammo. I just bought two more 800 round cans. The stuff is great. Cycles much better than the russian milsurps and is WAY more accurate. Did I mention it's purdy

I have been reloading for mine with Prvi 150gr SPBT bullets. I use the same load for my PSL-54C. NEVER use heavy ball in these rifles. Save it for use in a Mosin.

Since this is a SVT thread.
Anyone put a sniper scope on theirs?
I bought mine on impulse back in the mid 90's.
The SVT was a new import then, at least in large quantities.
I decided I wanted one. Bought one, and extra magazine, a Mosin M44, 440 rounds, for $249 all together. I could kick myself for not getting the bayonet, but they wanted $49 for that which seemed like a lot.
My regret is that I did a quick purchase as it was a bit of a frenzied table with lot of purchases.
Mine has a dutch repair on the stock and no rail cuts.
Sure wish it did have rail cuts as I would gget a sniper set up for it.
Anyone put a PU on theirs? Anyone heard of getting rails cut in the receiverComment
