I have used Tung oil to refinish a dining table. It sets up and dries harder than BLO (which never really seems to ever dry completely except over decades ... maybe). I like to apply oil thick and by hand with much friction to try to get it to infuse the wood. Wipe off excess before it sets up. Apply additional coats as desired but with Tung oil it begins to look like a varnish after several coats. OK, if that is what you like but for me, not so much. Keep air away from the unused portion, especially with Tung oil. Squeeze out the air from your bottle before recapping. Dispose of oily rags carefully. Wet with water and seal in can or spread out and air dry before putting in trash (risk of spontaneous combustion). -
I used that same tung oil (Real Milk Paint Co.) to finish the stock on my CMP Special Garand. I cut it 1:1 with mineral spirits so it would soak into the wood better. I did 5 or 6 coats and it turned out beautiful.
Like Hinnerk said, be mindful of how you store the used rags, they can and will spontaneously combust if allowed to air dry.Comment
