    Reloading for a mosin?

Reloading for my 1922 mosin. I used 150 and 174gr with good results. I tryed some 225gr bullets with imr4831 50.7gr. Sound when hitting steel at 200 and 300 meters was good and clear. Only problems were upper hand guard and action screws loose after 5 rounds.
Do you guys think that I might be over working this old rifle with 225gr bullets? Thanks

I just ran my first reloads through my M39 last weekend using a 150 gr Prvi FMJBT and 44.8 gr IMR 4064. It was shooting about 6" higher than the PPU factory ammo with the same bullet so I'll try backing the powder down a couple of grains and try again.

Back on your topic, the 225 gr might be pushing it a bit. I'm fairly new to Mosin's so someone with more experience than me can chime in. I know many Finns are marked for the 180 gr bullet, not sure about the Russians.

Some Finns are marked "D" to show the throat has been opened up for a 200gr bullet. I'd think you would have to seat a 225 pretty deep in the case to allow the cartridge to chamber without hitting the lands. If it shoots well, I don't see why it would be a problem. I know there is load data for 220s in a few of my loading books.

I have moved to the opposite side of the scale... I am currently running 100gr Lapua Cutting Edge HP flat base bullets and find them to be extremely accurate in my 28-30s, even with a huge jump to the lands. Quite amazing.

This is at 100yds, open sights off the bench with the cutting edge bullets. They cut a hole like a paper cutter!!

I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.
