    Wise choice in my opinion.

The service grades are a pretty safe bet.

How do you know this??? Guys only post pics and brag about the cherry rifles never the dogs. As I mentioned before I have perosnally handled and gauged many hundreds of FG Garands and many were canidates for rebarrels with muzzle wear of 7.

It is by no means scientific. I am merely stating the satisfaction level from many on forums and from my visits to the South store. Of course no one can say for sure how any particular field grade will gauge, and that's why i encouraged the OP in ordering a service grade. Next time i receive a subpar fiekd grade, you will be the first to know

          Cheers!

I have a few SG's and they were ALL in excellent condition with original wood so I bought a couple of Field Grades and they were closer to what I thought was Service Grade. I don't know of anyone receiving a Dog, if they didn't like it they could always return them. CMP is an excellent outfit and I see many CMP rifles at Gun Shows selling for twice of what they were purchased.

Most that required rebarrel were rebarreled before being inventoried, maybe you were looking at Rack Grade?

California Rifle and Pistol Association membership also fulfills this requirement and you will be supporting our fight for gun rights in CA.

What is the general consensus on making a $25 or better contribution on the order form? Do they notice or was I just lucky getting 3 out of 3 field grades all gauging under 2? (Two gauged 1 and under for both muzzle and throat.)

If you want to send a $$$ bribe/ contribution its up to you. Bottom line is you will receive the grade ordered, any requests within reason will try and be honored wether you give extra $$$ or not. They will not search through stacks and stacks of rifles to get your request
