So I went to visit family in Mexico in February and ended up finding out that my father in law had two very old rifles. They were two Mauser. One I think was a 1902 German made and the other a 1910 Mexican made rifle. Sorry no pics. So, my question is how can I get them sent here to California? Or if that's even possible? I want to do it by the book. Thanks!

Mexican Mauser help and info????

Wow, those are very special finds indeed. Most of the Mexican Mausers I find up here in the States are from the 30's. The fact that they are 1902 and 1910 suggest that they could have been used during the Mexican Revolution -- a very cool find indeed. I am quite jealous.
I hope that you find the answer you are looking for to obtain these historical pieces. Best of luck!WTB: Winchester /Miroki 1895 .30-06; No1. Mk. III SMLE .303 British; M96 Swedish Mauser 6.5x55mm; M39 Finnish Mosin 7.62x54r; S&W 625 .45 ACP; Glock 17.I purge the wicked. The impious madness must end. I shall be the instrument of Armageddon. Mexican Mausers are way Kewl. The 1902 were made by DWM of Germany formerly Loewe. And the 1910s were made in house under license from Mauser.
Here is a quick n short history
G-man, do you have any provenance for the picture? Lady in foreground is holding a US model 1917. Complete with dog leg bolt handle and sight ears. she must have had a "friend" in Los Estados Unidos.
I met an old gentleman in Chloride Az at the VFW in 1982 that had fought with the US Cavalry along the Mexican border. He had a 1902 that he had liberated off of a Zapata fighter in a skirmish in Az. Beautifull rifle.Comment

"By the book" means you would have to get a licensed importer to import them for you, since they would not be classified as "sporting" rifles (importable with a Class 03 FFL) but military (requires a Class 07 FFL). This could get quite expensive and time-consuming (I oughta know, since we once were licensed importers).
I would agree that if driving just stick them in your trunk, as customs is looking for firearms being exported *INTO* Mexico, but they are specifically not concerned with any over-100 year-old bolt rifles being imported into the U.S.A.Comment

Eh, if the owner of Empire Arms gave me some advice on bringing old military rifles into the US, I think I would take it.
Except of course, don't those Mexican policemen make a living off of "La Mordita" - and seeing some firearms in a car leaving their country might give them ideas.
Is there any problems bringing old rifles into Mexico if you say you are going to shoot them there and then bringing them back? I just wonder what they do if they find any firearms in your car. I heard that a guy visiting Canada forgot that he had some rifles in his camper and told the Canucks that he had no weapons. Unfortunately he had a big NRA sticker on the back of his camper. A few minutes later he had them confiscated. No jail, but no weapons either. Just wondering if that happens on the southern border too.Comment

Not exactly the same scenario you propose but remember the Marine who spent seven months in a Mexican jail last year for having three firearms in his pickup? He wasn't even trying to enter Mexico and got stuk at the San Ysidro crossing because he couldn't turn his truck around. He was only released early because he had PTSD. I wouldn't try crossing the border with any firearms, it's just not worth the risk.Is there any problems bringing old rifles into Mexico if you say you are going to shoot them there and then bringing them back? What if I have them send me the rifles in pieces by mail?"God grants liberty only to those who love it, and are always ready to guard and defend it."

That's awesome. My grandfather used a 1917 enfield on the ranch in Jalisco.
How much do Mexican Mausers usually sell for here in the states?Always do sober what you said you'd do drunk. That will teach you to keep your mouth shut.

You need to check what the laws are for shipping out of Mexico and receiving those parts here. No point in someone going to jail over something that can be avoided.
If (and it's a big if) it is legal to ship and receive parts, the receiver will be your hangup. To import the receiver you will need to go through someone who can handle the firearm importation paperwork. It may even be cheaper to have the rifle imported all in one piece, but you would have to get that info from someone who knows the laws and associated costs.Comment

Typically about twice what a German Mauser goes for in comparable condition.
They are a modern M98 design with the advanced gas handling capabilities of the Large Ring model. But built on a 7x57 scale Small Ring reciever. Much more sleek and desirable as sporters.
