Initial Arisaka questions UPDATED with pics

So this guy I know from work found out I collect and said he wants to sell his stepdad's bringback Arisaka.
I don't know much yet but its in decent shape and has the original aircraft sights.
So does this make it a particular type or could any have those sights? I should have pictures in about a week. He has no idea as to value.
Not much to go on I know but any input is welcome. Or things to look for.

I do not believe Type 38 rifles had anti-aircraft sights so the weapon is probably a Type 99. Good Luck.

T38's did have some AA sights

However, it's most likely a T99. Some pics will tell us if it's early or "Last Ditch" style

I usually see T38's and T99's around $2-300. The former will be on the higher end and the latter will be more on the lower end

It's an early series Type 99 if it has the fold out AA sights. They were not installed on last ditch rifles or on Type 38's, 44's or 97's. Get yourself a good reference book like the one Fred Honeycutt wrote and you will know this and more. Series and Arsenal mark will be right next to the serial number if you take pictures.

Ok I ordered the book. I will see the rifle in a couple of weeks. It only has a file mark across the mum. If not sporterized I will try to make a deal. It is supposed to be in good shape. And sounds like a standard T99 with AA sights missing the dust cover.

Tony, there were 40 series of Type 99's made during the war. Of those with AA sights, some had dust covers, and some had dust cover grooves in the receiver, buy never had dust covers installed. When you can take pictures of the rifle, post a CLEAR photo of the series symbol (found just ahead of the receiver serial number) and we can ID which series you have. Geologyjohn

Check for a monopod as well, and see if the chamber is still 7.7

T99 Short Rifle Kokura series 24?

I don't collect Japanese rifles, although I own a few, no idea if worth finding a stock to replace that hack bubba job.

ground mum, broken aircraft sight, no dust cover, no monopod, no cleaning rod... (not that this particular one necessarily came with a monopod or dust cover.)

Replacement stock would also need to come with metal that's missing (rear band)
I dont' think I'd invest much (any) money into it. :/

I feel your disappointment. The last time a non-gun guy called me it was to come over and look at his recently departed WWII vet uncle's M1 Garand that they found under his bed.

It was a rusty 22 LR bolt action.

I actually like the look of it

Arisakas generally are fairly inexpensive, so I wouldn't pay over $100 for it... and that's the high end I think

And yes, it's a series 24 Kokura Arsenal

Does it have papers? IIRC that looks like its been duffel cut.
