I've shown this before but I never pass up a chance to show it again!

Factory made sporter by BSA using the Long Lee Enfield receiver, barrel, sights, and wood of the rifle suitably trimmed and checkered with a Lee Enfield military carbine bolt with dust cover. Almost looks like a Brit bubba did it but this was in fact the BSA utility grade model of their Enfield based sporters of the day. Sold in 1914.

Back in the day, sporterized milsurp rifles were the way to go. I worked for a gunsmith back then (part time job) and we drilled and tapped many a 1903 and 1903A3 Springfield for scope mounts. They also had what we called a semi sporter where the owner would remove the upper handguard and lop off about half the stock. Those rifles were a monstrosity. With the cost and accuracy guarantee of modern rifles (Howa, Savage, Weatherby Vanguard, Ruger American, etc), it doesn't make sense to ruin a nice piece of history.

Interesting that they used the military parts (right down to the magazine cutoff) and put a sporter stock on it.

          Its thick.

With the pistol grip and comb, its a pleasure to shoot. Boringly accurate.

I used to have a sporterized 1917 that I sold. I thought it was too heavy at the time (it was) but that's one I'd really like to have back.
I'll have to get a pic of my 99 in .257 Roberts. My FIL killed a lot of deer with his 99 rebarreled in 300 Savage.
