    Pitting on barrel of 91/30

So I pulled my recently picked up 91/30 last week and while stripping the rifle to get all the cosmoline off, I found this little pitted gem. From the looks of the pitting, it does not look like it has penetrated to the inside of the barrel. I tried to get the best pics I could with my iphone.

Opinions from the guys who have been around multiple C&R rifles, is this something that I should worry about? The 54R round is a pretty good size round, I would hate to have one torch an hole in my barrel where that pitting is.

I have looked inside the barrel and I have not seen an signs of pitting or scarring to the barrel itself. Thanks for any info.

/\ Ya.. what really counts is the crown and muzzle. Pull a cotton swab/ Q-Tip out of the muzzle and observe for any material grabbing at the muzzle. Also, see about ways of free-floating the barrel.

Neutralize the rust using a brush and oil, if you go crazy with a wire wheel or steel brush you'll wear the surrounding finish off quickly.

That pitting is nothing to worry about, one of my favorite shooters looks like it was recovered from a shipwreck.

        Enjoy the rifle!

both of the chinese T-53s i recently picked up had some pitting in the same place that you have. I cleaned that area the best i could and did like the Russians did during referb, I put on a little paint to seal pitting. I like the paint better than oil because it does not wipe off while cleaning.

That's actually the worst rust I've seen. But do as others have said. It's fine

Kroil and a copper brush/scrub pad will take care of that. Oil afterwards.

It takes a LOT more than a little rust to break a mosin. you will be fine.

Thanks for the info everyone. I'll hit it with a wore wheel, treat it and then shoot the hell out of it with the others. Strange this is the first time I have come across the pitting. I will try the qtip to the crown trick though, first I have heard of that.
