    Cap n powder?

New to black power, just picked up a New Navy. My question is this. If you wanted to in effect shoot blanks would you just shoot caps or would you use a light power load. Seems a light power load would give it a more realistic smoky look. Bot then what would you use to hold the power in place?

I guess you could use wad but then you have more then blast exiting the barrel. Not that I would be pointing it at anyone but I still don't want a projectile if I can avoid it. Was considering soft wax.

    Any suggestions?

I have never done it but I hear that people use something called "floral foam". It is apparently foam you can cut to make floral arrangements. Use a punch to make a foam wad the size of your bore. Then load the powder charge and seat the foam over it. Cap it off and you are ready to go. Even though it is a blank, it is still dangerous so you cannot have anyone in front of you when you shoot. 4 rules still apply.

I use newspaper wadded up with lube over the top to stop cross over ignition. It makes the same boom.

A light load of BP followed by either floral foam or cream of wheat then top with crisco or whatever grease you want to. I sometimes use wonder wads for live fire but not for blanks. The wonder wad will still turn into a projectile whereas the cream of wheat and floral foam both pretty much dissipate at the muzzle.

Perfect, that was what I was afraid a wonder wad bouncing off say the ground and hitting someone or something important.

I have used Cream of Wheat to resize brass b4, smells great, I will give it a try.

Use butter flavored Crisco to seal your loads and enjoy the smells even more.

I think I use about 15 grains of FFFg.

I've heard wadded up toilet paper works for blanks. Years many years ago we tried wax and they go a lot further then you think they would.

Edit: of you try the TP do it some place just to be sure it doesn't end up being a fire starter.

Florist foam is the answer. Just compact a decent hunk of it over a black powder charge. Some guys will grease over that, but there isn't really any need to. Same thing works for making cartridge blanks as well, but on those you should modify the flash hole to a larger size so that the primer won't back out.
