    Sorry about the late reply.

Penalty for an unregistered and non-compliant "assault weapon" is stiff; a felony with significant jail time. Here is a flow chart that will help you navigate this "law" https://www.calguns.net/caawid/flowchart.pdf.

I recommend disassemble anything you suspect as non-compliant (IIRC the rifle needs to function to be considered an AW), and make it legal asap.

For a new post, there is a "new topic" button at the top left of the forums page.

What is the penalty if you get busted for a gun that's not California compliant? For example my Hi Point 995TS carbine with no Paddle Fin on the grip.
And here's a dumb question. Where do you click on the forum page to create a new post? Any help appreciated.
      Disable your rifle.

      Keep CCR 5471(hh) in mind:
A weapon clearly designed to be semiautomatic but lacking a firing pin, bolt carrier, gas tube, or some other crucial part of the firearm is not semiautomatic for purposes of Penal Code sections 30515, 30600, 30605(a), and 30900.
      (1) A mechanically whole semiautomatic firearm merely lacking ammunition and a proper magazine is a semiautomatic firearm.
      (2) A mechanically whole semiautomatic firearm disabled by a gun lock or other firearm safety device is a semiautomatic firearm. (All necessary parts are present, once the gun lock or firearm safety device is removed, and weapon can be loaded with a magazine and proper ammunition.)
      (3) With regards to an AR-15 style firearm, if a complete upper receiver and a complete lower receiver are completely detached from one another, but still in the possession or under the custody or control of the same person, the firearm is not a semiautomatic firearm.
      (4) A stripped AR-15 lower receiver, when sold at a California gun store, is not a semiautomatic firearm. (The action type, among other things, is undetermined.

      Buy something like this.

I finally gave in and built myself an AR15 pattern rifle. Bear Creek side charge upper, Green Mountain 20" fluted SS barrel, and Thordsen Gen III stock, generic 25" free float tube. Test firing is waiting on the arrival of an adjustable gas block. Bushnell AR dropzone 4.5-18 scope.

I really do like the feel of the Thordsen stocks. Very comfortable to shoot & carry compared to the ones I have with fin grips.
Gotta see how Brownell's AlumaHyde holds up on the bottom one....once I can finally get back to a range after this quarantine.

Do not try and bend the spoon, that's impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth...there is no spoon.

BRN-180 upper on SCR Lower with SGA stock. Not drop-in but not too bad. I think this has to be the ultimate CA featureless answer, no?

                      Yes, possibly the ultimate answer.

                      vandal,
Details on the mods necessary to fit the SGA to the SCR will be appreciated.

IMO, the SGA's extensions and available cheek risers make it a great practical match for the SCR+BRN180.

Now if only someone can come up with a nice trigger for it

BradN on AR15.com makes an adapter to mount the SGA on the SCR. He's posting in the SCR Pics thread or I have his email if you want to buy one.

Mounting the SGA with this adapter is totally straightforward. However it replaces the buffer tube so you can't continue to run an AR15 upper with the SCR bolt carrier/tail. That's why I went with the BRN-180 upper.

Mods to make the BRN-180 upper fit on the SCR lower: Filing down the molded-in "fake bolt carrier" area on the plastic spring cap, milling a slot in the upper to give the SCR sear room to work, and slightly widening the hammer slot.

Off to the range today for first shots!

ETA: Ran 100%. My SCR lower is the Gen 2 (pre-FightLight) and has a fantastic trigger.

Awesome, might've gone this route when I was building my SCR if all of these parts were available back then?

                            Love it!
