I am a painter/finisher by trade, but im still new to gun painting. While i've painted a lot of metal, i just dont have the experience with guns yet. I just refinished my wasr and it came out really nice. the wood was no problem, but i havent tested the metal yet, shot the barrel, accidently droped it etc..
I used an industrial metal primer and krylon then 5-6 coats of flat lacquer.
I would be very interested to talk to someone else with experience in this area.
Do you use the krylon as a primer?
What goes on top? Duracoat?
I am still doing my homework on duracoat but planning to do some experimenting, samples etc...
this gun originaly came with a nasty black oxide finish and some varitey of cheap wood. I'm sure your familiar with wasr's. anyway, its great shooter...
i was going for russian red, but the grain was so ugly i kept going darker. I use the traditional furniture method, UTC and lacquer, not very well known outside of the finsihing/decorator community. I'm still not 100% sure on the endurance factor. I cant find anyone who finishes their guns this way.Last edited by SanPedroShooter; 04-16-2010, 1:19 AM.Comment

I'm just using the Krylon as temp. protection. I actually prefer to park the metal and then paint and bake on with alumahyde II. This AMD 65's receiver and muzzle brake was painted with AHII. The pistol grips were refinished with a few coats of Tung Oil.

So you strip the krylon later? I'll have to look into alumahyde. Thanks for the tips. You have an awesome collection BTW.
Do you do all the work yourself? I have a shop in Harbor City with a spray booth etc.. I've been thinking about getting the set up to do parkerizing.
Might be nice side work... Parking and painting recievers/barrels doing wood work etc... I just have to practice on my own guns first.Comment

nice folders. the middle ones a wasr, huh? i can tell by the wood grain. You should clean those babys up!
What model is the side folder? I've been thinking about getting a wire stock like that.
By the way, you might want to think about somekind of mag lock.Comment

Hey Mach, do you know if alumahyde comes in quart or gallon cans?
I fugured i could use my own spray equipment and custom tint colors.Comment
