Featureless rifle - best comp or brake?

All my Cali legal AR style rifles have bullet buttons. Now, I am going to build a 16" featureless (.223).

What brake or comp is the least worst for muzzle flash?

I have read the thread with all the brakes and comps and their legality. So, the Battlecomp is out. The list is a couple years old. So, there are probably a couple new ones to consider.

What would you pick if flash was your main concern?

I know the choice of ammo makes a difference too. I am just trying to pick the least ugly girl at the ugly girl party.

Because it could be construed as a flash hider. And before anybody tries to start a debate over it PLEASE read the million and one threads about it first. I promise, you don't have any new arguments about it (not directed at anyone in particular)

When the Battlecomp initial was introduced the manufacturer stated it was a flash hider in addition to being a compensator.

A few years ago, the manufacturer scrubbed all references of it being a flash suppressor/hider and started insisting it is solely a muzzle compensator.

I run a YHM Phantom, I dont notice it being any louder or flahier than an A2. I was pleasantly surprised.

I keep one AR featureless for the purposes of teaching in CA. It is equipped with a YHM Phantom brake. I don't notice it being any louder than the standard A2 FH and no one's ever complained about blast.
I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!

              3rd YHM Phantom 5M1/2.

              Cheap, effective.

Its not, just a gray area that people are uncomfortable with. BC has a letter from ATF stating its a comp/muzzlebrake not a flash suppressor. CADOJ relies on 2 things: 1. What ATF says and 2. how the product is marketed.
Initially it was marketed as a comp/muzzle brake with flash suppressing properties. BC has since pulled that reference and markets it as a comp/muzzlebrake only.

CADOJ won't rule on anything like this and as far as I know, no one has been a test case. I have run one for years on a featureless, LE and non LE tactical classes/matches and have not had one issue.

That's pretty much it in a nutshell....

That's what I thought. When I bought my 2.0 it was a brand new product and marketed as a comp only. I did send an email so we will see what they say.

Very interesting. I just went to their website and they state explicitly

The BattleComp is NOT a flash hider

I agree it is still a grey area. But, it might be worth considering.

This is the best comp on the market IMO (for compensation). I have used a lot of comps and this makes the 5.56 into a 22LR. Return shots insanely fast.

How does it do in low light?

All I care about is the flash signature.

I think the Battlecomp 2.0 is marketed as having some flash suppression. Not sure why since the only difference seems to be the grooves but I don't own both.

I think the Surefire Procomp is probably one of the best bang for buck brakes. The threaded version for suppressor seems to be highly rated and since we can't have suppressors anyways, wouldn't hurt to save money and get the procomp.

My only complaint about these brakes are that they are kind of long. I like the compact size of the battlecomp, but not at nearly 3 times the price
