    7.62x39 Ammo

Getting money together to bulk purchase some 7.62x39 ammo and I'm not entirely sure what kind to get. What I'm looking for is a round that has good terminal performance (possibly use for hog hunting) and can be stored for an extended amount of time. Most threads I've read are a little dated and people were recommending Wolf Military Classic 124gr HP or Tula 124gr HP since they used to use the 8m3 bullet. My understanding is that neither of them use 8m3 bullets anymore and I was wondering what people here would recommend. Is the WPA 124gr HP still worthwhile even though it's not 8m3? Should I give up on HP ammo and look into SP? If so what kind?

I know that FMJ is cheaper for plinking but when the difference is about $20 per 1000 rounds I'd rather just buy one type of ammo. If there is no decent cheaper ammo I guess I'll have to just buy FMJ and some Hornady for the hogs

I've always heard good things about M67 surplus ammo. I'm sure some modern ammo companies could manufacture something better (=$$$) but if you're looking to buy bulk of just one type of ammo I would try and get some of this.

    this is from Wikipedia:

    "M67
In the 1960s Yugoslavia experimented with new bullet designs to produce a round with a superior wounding profile, speed, and accuracy to the M43. The M67 projectile is shorter and flatter-based than the M43. This is mainly due to the deletion of the mild steel insert. This has the side effect of shifting the center of gravity rearward in comparison to the M43. This allows the projectile to destabilize nearly 17*cm (6.7*in) earlier in tissue. This causes a pair of large stretch cavities at a depth likely to cause effective wound trauma. When the temporary stretch cavity intersects with the skin at the exit area, a larger exit wound will result, which takes longer to heal. Additionally, when the stretch cavity intersects a stiff organ like the liver, it will cause damage to that organ. However, the wounding potential of M67 is mostly limited to the small permanent wound channel the bullet itself makes, especially when the bullet yaws (tumbles)."

Be aware of this ammo. While it is excellent stuff, it is VERY corrosive. Most references to it are "Mildly Corrosive"....but it is Corrosive...period. Clean accordingly and you'll have no problems. HTH c good

I'm not familiar with hunting but I've read posts about using non-lead ammo, so if you're planning to hunt hogs, you might want to make sure the ammo you buy uses non-lead bullets?

I say buy a little of each and test at 109yds/100m. Once you really like something, then buy your bulk. I am actually running a test here soon because I was blown away at how poorly some types of ammo, like Wolf Yellow box, performed out of one of my AKs.

Red Army Standard outperformed Tula and Wolf in the last comparison I did. I just bought some Hornady SST (gee I wonder if it's any good), Golden Tiger, Fiocchi, Privi, Arsenal, and something else, can't remember, from SG Ammo and I will compare that to the Wolf Yellow, Wolf Mil Classic, Wolf Polyformance, Yugo M67, Tula/Herter's, etc that I already have. I will shoot it out my 12" Draco with red dot and 16" Romy, irons. It'll be a long day, but somehow I will manage....

I'd be hog hunting on private property in Arkansas...friend has a hog problem and said he'd feed me and give me a place to stay if I want to head out there, kind of hard to find the time with 2 kids and my wife working nights but I'm trying to get out there in the next few months

Definitely looking forward to reading that, do you do any gel block tests to see how the bullet performs?

Golden tiger is another wolf product line has sealed primers and seal around bullet seating. This translates in to a good candidate for long term storage.

For anyone looking for cheap plinking ammo, J&G has Wolf regular steel case on sale for .18 per round. That is the cheapest I have seen AK ammo for in ages.
