Is this a flash hider or comp/brake?

I'm starting my first OLL AR-15 build, and so far I've gotten the completed 18" mid-length gas system A4 upper from RRA, a U-15 stock, a couple 10-round mags, and a detachable A2 handle with sight.

Taking a good look at the end of the barrel, though, I'm wondering, is this what would be called a "flash hider", or is it a normal muzzle brake or compensator?



It's hard to tell, but the opening is cone-shaped, and there are five slots in a semi-circle from left to right over the top (none on the bottom). To be CA-legal-er, should I replace this with a "proper" muzzle brake or compensator?

That is a flash hider. If you are building a featureless rifle, you need to get a comp/brake. They are usually identified by the exit hole, being the same size (or close) as the bore. Also, as being advertised (described by the manufacturer) as a brake/comp.

its a flash hider.if your going the featureless route for dropping mags freely,get yourself a muzzlebrake asap or a thread protector.

Okay, thanks for the confirmation. I suspected it was a flash hider, but I figured I'd ask those who know better than I.

I'll be adding a compensator to my order when I get the rest of the parts I need.

Buy the FSC 556 from primaryweapons systems. Its a brake but works better than any flash hider.

Is this a permanent accessory or screw on style. There was one up the other day in the for sale stuff that had a really wide brake on it. It looked really sweet and said it helped a lot, but never found out what it was or where he got it. I wanted to look into them.

Looks like a Standard A2 "compensator" what I was taught in the Marines.

I absolutely would not use anything that the manufacturer claims eliminates or reduces flash on a CA featureless rifle, no matter what the BATFE says.

The CA definition is that it noticeably reduces flash from the shooter. The best functional definition we have is whether the seller claims it's a flash hider. PWS calls it a flash suppressing comp. That is WAY above my threshold.

There are a LOT of excellent brakes out there that don't have these issues - OPS Inc, SureFire, even the PWS brake.

Yeah, the JP one was the one I was talking about. I may get that for my 16" for plinking. I don't really need it, but then again don't really "Need" my AR at all.
