    AK style rifle help!

Because I was only interested in AR type rifles, it seems I really don't know much about AKs. The problem is, I now want one and dont know much about em. I have been doing my research, but can't figure out which path to go. I don't want something very expensive, since its only going to be a plinker. But I need something reliable (no jams) and accurate up to a hundred yards. Now Ive been looking into a few options. The first, which I don't know how they are legal (if someone can explain) is a 7.62X39 Saiga. I was thinking of picking one up and having the magazine conversion and bullet guide done to it. I was thinking I can keep the monte carlo style stock, so I may use my prebans. Can I change the forward furniture on the rifle to a more classic looking ak? Also aren't saigas listed by name? So how will this be legal? Another option I was thinking of is going with a traditional Ak. As far as MMG or bullet button, I can figure out later, but I would need somthing built, becausecantput it together. Ive seen the lancaster models and the century wasr and there is a significant difference in price. What is the difference. Which would fit my needs better? Ive also read bulgarian models are very good quality. Are the parts kits expensive? Does anyone have them made ready with mayber a nodak spud reciever? If not, anyone out there that can put em together? I have more questions, I just wanna get started off with these first. If there is anyone out there, who knows alot about this topic, builds, or has for sale, who wouldn't mind taking a few moments speaking to me on the phone, please pm me with contact info. If not please kindly reply to this thread. Once again thank you.

AK's are awesome. If you want an inexpensive AK then get the WASR. If you want a showpiece that you will be proud to own......get a Lancaster. I did a side by side comparison with those two. Not even close, pick them up and take a good look at em'. The fit and finish of the Lancaster is phenomonal.

Now you mentioned a Saiga, totally legal. The Kalashnikov USA Saiga hunter is banned by name.

The Russian American Armory is G.T.G. Now the Saiga is a real Russian manufactured genuine AK. Some were shipped by accident with the dreaded 3rd pin installed.

You can convert a Saiga in a few hours to "evil the streets will run red with the blood of puppy's and kitten's black rifle glory." Really all your doing is moving the fire control group forward to the standard location. Install a bullet guide , mod the mag release a bit. Then swap the furniture.

If you wanted to use standard AK mags, than a bullet guide is needed and you get to dance the 922r waltz

The wise, learn from the mistakes of others.
The smart, learn from their own mistakes.
The others, well......they just never learn.

I understand there are differences in quality, but for an everyday plinker/beat up rifle, will the wasr be sufficiant? I just dont want jamming problems. Like I said accuracy only has to be up to a 100 yards. Its going to be a beater. As far as the saiga goes, is it worth going through all the hoops, just because its russian? I knwo some enthusiast want the best quality, but im just going to throw this thing around and plink with it. I may or may not even clean it. The most important thing is durabilty. Also no I live in Northridge, thats a pretty big distant to sacramento...

If the rifle has the slant muzzlebreak and a bayonet lug, would I still be able to use the monster man grip?

              yes

YES. Muzzle break and bayo lug are not evil features.
