Do you want it to be magazine-fed? My only .308 bolt-action is a Cooper Arms M22 Phoenix (synthetic stock). It was originally a Montana Varminter, but I recently had the factory fit it with their new Phoenix stock. The M22 is a single-shot action. It shoots sub 1/2" groups at 100 yards, using hunting bullets.

This is my antelope rifle. I have taken two antelope with it in Wyoming thus far, on 10/01/2003 and 10/01/2004, and will be flying there again at the end of this month to do it again, with the same rifle.

      Here's my beauty:

Kimber 84m in .308. A very light, elegant, accurate, and balanced package.

They make a stainless synthetic version called the Montana as well.

That they are light, they do beat the shoulder a bit when hunting paper, but it's well worth the tradeoff when you carry the thing for a few miles. I have a Ruger M77 Sporter in .270 and it feels like an absolute truck next to the Kimber.

        Remington 700!
I have a PSS that shoots well (better than the shooter, I'm not a good shot at all). Synthetic stock, accurate, easy to operate & clean & many aftermarket parts. But it's heavy if you are thinking carrying it around.

+ 1 on Remington. Low cost great accuracy. Its all in how much you want to spend.

I have a Savage 10FP. It puts three in a dime & shoots MOA easy. I have a cheap scope on it now that will not hold zero. Spend about the price on glass as you did on gun. http://www.savagearms.com/10fple1a.htm

I have a Savage in 22-250 and a Model 700 in 300 win mag they both are amazingly accurate. I shoot them mostly off hand at game so I cannot help you with target accuracy. I really am getting spoiled by the savages accutrigger, it is top notch right out of the box. You wont regret either. Sure you can spend a lot more on the new Kimber or a Sako or even a Ruger model 77 but for the money I would buy one of these and get better glass as Dullyjay already mentioned. My favorite bolt rifle is a sporterized 03-A3 in 30-06, but my dad built it so it hold a special place for me, even with the Pacific 3x9 scope on it.

I have a Savage 12 in 223 that shoots sub 1/2 inch groups. I shot with a guy who had a savage 10 in 308 that also shot 1/2 inch groups. Great guns for the money. The remmy's do have a nicer finish but I have found both shoot about the same.

My Winchester model 70 HighPower match type rifles are super accurate and reliable, but heavy. My 26" heavy barrels don't heat up and shift POI during 10 round rapid fire stage like a lighter barrel would, but these would be heavy to carry in the bush or mountains hunting. Unless you shoot matches you should be be fine with a shorter /thinner profile and lighter barrel.
It seems like most 'tactical' (black stock with big scope) shooters use a Rem 700 platform like PSS or custom, but Savage is a great value. If you are going to carry it much then a lighter platform with maybe fluted barrel really makes sense.
FYI high quality glass can run as much or more than the rifle.
You can find used set-ups for sale for much less, and that may be the way for you to go -
                  just my 02 cents :-)
