I would like to buy a 10/22 and mod it into a reasonably precise rifle (barrel, stock, etc.). Now the question is if the most basic one is the way to go?

Ruger makes 10/22s that are fairly well modded for a fairly reasonable price:

 and:

 and:

 or:

Now, if you want to mod it into a more "tactical" style rifle, then I'd say to just buy the base model and build your own 10/22 to suit your wants/desires.Comment

Volquartsen parts are best -- they have GREAT match barrels, triggers, and stocks. If they are out of your price range get a green mountain match barrel and a Bell & Carlson fiberglas stock and have Hornet Products in florida swap your trigger group for a rebuilt match one.

If money were no object, I'd consider either a Volquartsen steel receiver or one of the new Tactical Solutions X-Ring receivers:

Hmmmmm.......how much $$$ do you want to invest? I have a Model 10/22T target rifle. it had a .920 target bull barrel mounted in a laminated stock and was good. I changed the barrel to Green Mountain 20" stainless fluted target barrel and now I shoot 10 round one hole groups at 50yds! I have added an extended mag release, auto bolt release, titanium extractor, spring kit and a titanium firing pin. The rifle work great but expect to pay alot more then the stock model.sigpicWango Tango!Comment

After humping ten ARs and sniper rifles to the range, I miss just putting a 10-22 and a brick of 500 rounds of ammo in the car, driving to the dump and shooting cans all day. As cool as these OLLs are, you can have as much fun with a really accurate 10-22 and a ****load of ammo.

Rettings right now has a TON of different level Volquartsens -- they are the cream of the 22 semi auto cop. If you have a grand to drop on a gun that you can walk out the door with and shoot one hole all day long, you can't go wrong. Go check out the variety of them just to see what the best 22 feels like!

I should have just gotten another one of these instead of an R-5!Comment
