Screw Strip on the Barrel band of my ruger 10/22 Compact

    Hey everyone,

So, I'm taking my Ruger 10/22 Compact apart to clean. I made the mistake of taking the barrel band screw all the way out. Upon replacing the screw on the band and back onto the stock, I realize the band isn't tightening around the barrel/stock. I try flipping the barrel band and screw thinking maybe it's supposed to go a specific direction...no dice...still isn't securing the barrel to the stock.

So NOW...the screw is seized in the thread of the barrel band..after catching my knuckle with the screwdriver and beating the barrel band screw the he** and back, I've come to the sad conclusion I have no chance of removing said screw.

Has anyone else had this happen to them? What did I miss? What did I do?

    Thanks for your help......

Get a screwdriver with a proper head. The marks on the screw head tell a sad story. Hold the band in a padded vice if necessary.

Next time use a good gunsmith's screwdriver.

Cross threaded the band. Force can only displace and crush so much metal before the needed torque to displace more metal exceeds the rating of the slot in the screw (also, improper screwdrivers and screwdriver use exasterbate this problem) and the result is a siezed screw with a stripped head.

Just so you know, it's been shown that recrowning the Ruger 10/22 barrel (can be done at home with a special and relatively cheap hand tool from Brownells) and taking OFF the barrel band can significantly decrease group sizes. The barrel band puts unneeded pressure on the barrel and can tweak off the point of impact as compared to the point of aim, and since you can't tighten it the EXACT same every time without special tools your point of impact will seem to wander slightly.

Leave it off for a while and see how it works. You might find this disaster to be a blessing in disguise.

Use the proper screw driver! Feel free to PM me your address and I'll send you a new band and screw. I know I've got a SS one and I might have an extra black one around here too.

new band time. midway or numrich. next time only loosen enough to remove and use proper size screwdriver. part is cheap, not really worth trying to fix.

As always, thanks for the know how....I didn't think I used that much torque on the screw, but apparently, I did...

            I appreciate all the help.

Dump the factory stock and stick a Hogue on there. No barrel band and it will feel better when you shoot it.

the barrel band decreases accuracy from what i understand anyways. a floated barrel is best.

You can float the barrel and still have the band in place.

i would suggest taking out the screw and running it from the outside in clearing the buggering you have done then try to get it in there again going slow

or just get a new one they are fairly cheap i always see someone with a little box of them at every gunshow for less than $5 each

i too am curious how they come from the factory is it the screw head on the starboard or port side

ps by port i mean the side opposite the ejection port

If the OP did all that damage to that screw and barrel band his hamfisted self, he should be BEATEN with that rifle.

I mean seriously, look at the beating the slot in that screw has taken, BOTH ways. And then the gouges in the band. WTF?!
