I have a Colt Sporter RAW. I want to have some work done but in order to do that I have to send it out of state. What is the proper way to get this done?

I believe any gunsmith can do the work but you have to be there. Otherwise they need an AW permit for you to leave it there.
What are you having done? If it’s just something on the upper just drop that part off and keep the registered lower at home. I have had to do that before on my AR due to it being registered and the gunsmith not having an AW permit.Comment

It's the lower that needs work. Any CA AW permit holders in the SF Bayarea..near Fremont?Comment

I believe Tracy rifle and pistol has one.
What did you need done? The California Moderate Centrist Militia member in exile

Are you trying to get the sear blocked milled out?
As a fellow RAW Colt owner, that's probably one of the few reasons I can fathom for needing work done.

The lower is what they call "large hole lower". There is a gunsmith who can do large to small hole conversion. Yes I know I can purchase a Daniel Defense Large hole upper but I'd rather do this because I have several small hole lowers so I can swap uppers at anytime. I also want the lower refinished from the old battleship grey to black anodize. Also remove/modify the sear block.Comment

Ah. I don't own the large pivot pin Colts.
I've heard of offset pins. Those aren't going to work for you?
I did the sear block removal using a Dremel and several cutting wheels.
As far as the finish, I thought about refinishing, but I'd rather just keep the original finish until I really wear it out. Though, I myself have thought about how I would go about doing this with a RAW.

As for the anodizing color, have it ceracoated.
Stripping and re-anodizing will be way more effort than it is worth as it will involve the out-of-state FFL stripping disassembling the receiver and then sending it to an anodizing shop with an FFL.Randall Rausch

If they are properly aligned and loctited into place, the receiver will be just like a small pin receiver.Randall Rausch
