    So Cal M1-A smith?

Who is Gunsmith near LA that can replace my SOCOM II SAI internals with GI parts? And best place to get them?

Wow, just wow on the tacticool apparel.

Anyhow, what exactly do you plan on replacing on your SOCOM II and for what reason....I hope not to be tacticooler. Few things, you'll void the warranty on your rifle and why replace something that isn't broken? Doesn't make sense to me, but if money is burning a hole in your pocket to make you think you're rifle is going to function any better, or look any better, you might want to spend your money on more important things like ammo or mags. As for who works on them around to So. Cal area, I can't help you there. I sent mine to Ted Brown to be put together. Since your rifle is complete, the only crucial part would be the bolt in making sure it headspaces to the barrel.

Hope you don't take my post personally, I just don't see any logic in what you are trying to achieve.

You can try Entreprsie Arms in Irwindale near Azusa. I think they offer full service for the M1A.

You should be able to replace most of them yourself. I have heard good things about Enterprise +1 for giving them a try.

It's not for teh rifle in the picture -- I just want to have one SOCOM in the house without the bottom rail, in the factory stock, but with the most reliable parts as a secondary SHTF rifle.

This proves my point even more so. Buy a LRB or take your chance and end up paying more for a springfield. If I have to have a 308 gas gun, then ill by a FAL for battle rifle or a AR10 for precision. I have 2 M1As now. One scout and one standered. They have all the fixens on them, VLTOR rail systems, ACOG, Eotech, Arms Mounts. The Scout has USGI bolt and something else. Was it worth all the extra money, yes because it wasfree with the rifle. Otherwise sell and buy a LMT.

While Adam B. has some good points here's my take on it. Why dont you start out with a Scout rather than a Socom. The scout will have the same standard gas system as a full length M1A which can benefit you in 2 ways:

              1) You don't have to worry about a "special" gas system such as the Socom. There are still plenty of new USGI gas cylinders floating around, or buy a new production gas cylinder from LRB or Smith Enterprise (both are top notch).
              2) Because of it's standard gas system, you have a better chance of having a more reliable gas system.

If you want to go all out and have the most reliable M1A rifle you can set your hands on. I recommend you sell off what you can, buy a LRB receiver and start collecting all USGI parts then have a reputable smith put it together. That will get you as close to the real deal as you can. Criterion makes 18.5" chrome lined barrels too.

Maybe because it sounds like he already owns the Socom.

I know that. I was just stating that a Scout may be a better starting platform than a Socom as a "SHTF" type of gun.

Socom is already paid for. Idea of selling it and saving up for an LRB is cool -- just not going to happen i this economy. Just trying to make gun I have more reliable. BTW -- Cluster rail is a quarter inch starboard by the time it hits gas block. Anyone else got that?

What all do *you* plan on swapping on the Socom that you feel would improve the reliability of the rifle? Take a look at your bolt, if it has a "F" below the drawing number (7790186) then the bolt that you already have in your rifle is forged. So, by buying a USGI bolt would do nothing in the reliability sector. Probably the single most thing you can do to any SAI M1A's is to swap out the bolt guts (extractor, ejector, firing pin, extractor spring/plunger) to USGI components. The next thing I would do is buy a Sadlak NM spring guide. That alone will make your action feel smoother. Then I would perhaps buy some Tubbs Silicon springs for the main recoil spring and the hammer spring. Lastly, I would swap out the trigger housing for a forged USGI unit. If you don't feel comfortable with your oprod, find a USGI oprod. TRW are preferred since they are one piece forged but they come with a premium in cost. There are one piece forged Korean oprods (LRB and Fulton sell them) that have shown to be just as good as a TRW oprod with correct Rockwell hardness in the right places. By doing those mods, even I would feel comfortable having a Socom as a SHTF rifle if I had one.
