      Big 5 Spotting Scope?

How good are the Winchester spotting scopes at Big 5? They're usually $99 on sale. I don't remember the specs but I think they're 50X.

      Thank you for any info.

          I haven't seen a spotter under $200 that I would spend a dime on.

Eye relief is non-existant and exit pupil is horrible...

Agreed. Furthermore, glass quality is crap which means you will have a dim, grainy image at higher magnification...USELESS...

The only lower end scope I have heard somewhat favorable reviews of (considering the price) from high power shooters and others who like their glass is the Bushnell Spacemaster. But, I have not personally tried on...save up for a scope above 500 bucks...Justify it as a multipurpose buy...(shooting, birdwatching, checking out scenery/wildlife, looking at the moon on clear nights, spying on neighbors...err...j/k...) With a good spotting scope (Kowa, Leica, Swarovski, etc) the moon looks amazing at night under high magnification.

              Konus from http://www.jarheadtop.com/

              $225 shipped.

              Personally, I have a Kowa 661 with a 25x LER eyepiece and a Bushnell Spacemaster 20-45x60 as a backup.

Bushnell has marketed a bunch of different spotting scopes as the "Spacemaster" but they are not all the same.

I have two Spacemasters with 60mm objective lenses. One has a fixed 20X magnification, the other has a 15X-45X zoom. The body is made in Japan and the nameplate says "Spacemaster." I have no trouble seeing .22 holes at 50 yards with either scope. Ditto at 100 yards. The 20X fixed has better resolution than the zoom scope at the same magnification. I got he 20X fixed on ebay for $65. The zoom scope and a bullseye pistol box was $185.

I had a 60 mm with 15X-45 zoom Winchester scope. It had rubber armor and came in a cool case. But the resolution couldn't match the Spacemasters. You can see the .22 holes at 100 yards, but they aren't clear.

Look for a used 60mm Spacemaster on ebay. You can get them for about $100.

I posted this last week on another post about spotting scopes. I got to use one last month and they're a good deal for the money.

I'm honestly thinking about buying a Konus just to try it out.

Obviously I won't be ditching my Kowa for it, but I am intrigued by the word of mouth.
