old 22

Theres an old guy that lives near me that knows a lot about cars (retired mechanic I think) that offered to help when he saw my wifes' car window stop working. Ive gotten to know the guy pretty well and he is a major conservative/libertarian. We were talking about guns the other day and he mentioned he owned a 22 but that he hadn't touched it in over 20 or 30 years. Sensing it might be a collectors item that might be in danger from rust, I offered to take it home and clean it for him. He said sure and he asked me if I could appraise it for him. I have no knowledge of old rifles but I told him I'd be happy to take pics after I cleaned it and Id upload them for people who know more than I do.

*** PS: I already looked it up and these aren't high dollar guns. Still, most of what Im reading indicates these can be pretty accurate. However, since it has been sitting for 30 years and he doesn't remember how well it functions who knows if its a reliable tack driver or a POS. Ill be happy to invite him and this beauty with me the next time I go shooting though, Id love to find out!

JC Higgins never made anything that I'm aware of, it was all repop other peoples stuff.

Looks kinda like an old Nylon 66, but I don't think it is, more like a Marlin I'm betting.

$50-$80 is a realistic price but, in CA, he might get $100.

those are the ones with the cool patented retractable sling.

they can be retracted completely into the inside of the stock.

I forgot to add it also looks like they're made by High Standard.

I have some old house brand JC Higgins shotguns originally sold by Sears..

these were as mentioned above, all rebranded from actual gun manufacturers..

Higgins was a Sears store employee from the 1800's that became a manager of some kind..

Sears honored his company contributions by naming their firearms line after him..

later Sears adopted Ted Williams namesake for their firearms line..
