    Magazine happiness...

I finally finished my featureless (Hammerhead grip) flat top M4gery build with the 16" chrome lined Bushmaster barrel, so I thought I would tackle my mags next.

I finally got around to rebuilding all (something like a dozen and a half) of my pre-2000, 30 round USGI M16/AR15 mags, some of which I have had since the 70s when I was in the service. The "newest date back to the late 80s or early 90s, well before I retired as an LEO in 2000.

There were Adventureline, Parson's, Colt, Sanchez, and O Kay. Most had early black followers, a few had newer green USGI, and a couple had Magpul followers. One part numbered Colt mag has the dark green follower with the white 62xxx Colt part code on it (I kept that one and its spring aside for later). Some of the 30s have had low round usage, and some very high usage.

I got new springs and Magpul followers for all. When I broke them down, many of the springs were the same length as the new replacement springs, but some were shorter by 1/2 to 3/4 inch. I seriously doubt if I will have any FTFs now (though the only rare ones I had were from old mags with the early black GI followers, Those, by coincidence, were the ones that had the shortest springs!)

Now someday I need to get new springs for my two dozen early 20 rounders, most of which are 1960s vintage "Colt 223" marked with aluminum followers. No hurry on those, though, since I only use them with my 20" retro 602/SP1 clone when I run it featureless.

I rebuilt a badly dented "Simmonds" with a Nodak Spud 601 waffle magazine body, and I also rebuilt one later "Universal Industries" (black plastic follower) 20 rounder that had crushed lips with a newer "curved" 20 rounder body, and the new USGI tan follower and longer (front to rear) and narrower (side to side) GI spring. Much handier with the low profile of the hammerhead grip on it. I like that as the "in the weapon" magazine, with a 1980's vintage Galati Int. six- pack of 30s over the shoulder for a snatch and grab.

Hahaha! I'll do some "mag porn" when I take pictures of my M4gery!.

Being in your 60s DOES have its advantages, as does having the foresight to NEVER get rid of magazines, even when you sell a weapon! It also helps that I was an FFL for 25 years, and sold cases of surplus mag and stuff through Shotgun News before Al Gore ever thought of the internet! (tongue in cheek!)

Magazine porn.... I forgot to get the mags out of my range bag for the picture, so the pile is 6 or 8 short! The "6-pack" is full, too!

That is a ridiculous amount of mags.

Haha! No, no zombie invasion. I'm old, and just never got rid of any mags through my FFL, LEO and military years.

Its from Galati international. I bought it back about 1988 or so for my Colt SP1 carbine I had, then used it for my XM177E2 I carried as a LEO trunk weapon for a time. After that used it for various AR builds continuously ever since. Still in great shape for something I have been using for the last 26 years.

Let's see. Two AR platforms and 40+ magazines of various flavors. That's only 20 per weapon. If I do a third AR build like I want, that would be only 13 per weapon.... Seems about right to me. I have 20 or so for my saiga, and I won't tell you how many for the HK91 and M1 carbine!

No its not. You should have minimum 10 mags per rifle you own.

                          Looks good OP!

I agree! When I was a LEO/Armorer, I always preached have twice the magazines of your basic load i.e. My duty belt load for my Glock 19 is three mags, so I have 6. The same for my vintage S&W 59, 3 mags duty load, 6 mags on hand. My basic combat load in the military for my M16A1 or later my USAF GAU-5/A/A was 210 rounds/7 mags. So I maintained 14 to 15 mags for the weapon. 7 mags was my load for my AR platform as an LEO also. (5) 30 rounders and (2) 15s in a stock pouch was my load for my M1 Carbine when I carried it as a LEO trunk weapon, so I maintained 10 30 rounders and stacks of 15 rounders.

maybe that isn't his only AR?
