    AR Terminology Help Needed

In shopping for complete uppers, I see terms that I cannot determine the meanings to, such as:

    1. post-ban vs. pre-ban: Can I buy either one now and what is the difference?

    2. H2, H3, H4, etc.?

    3. A1, A2?

    4. CAR, tactical, etc. (I understand the varminter one)

    Thanks in advance.

Wow! Why do we need this forum when there's Google? I'm sure that's what you tell your students as well.

Well, the problem is these questions have been answered many, many times and if you spend about one hour of your time to figure it out yourself you'll get all the answers.

As for my students, I try to teach them self reliance and if they tried and failed then I throw them a bone.

Depends on the ban, but generally this refers to compliance with the now-defunct federal AWB that was in effect from 1994-2004. During that time pre-ban could have threaded muzzles and bayonet lugs, but post-ban could not. In some locales this ban remains in effect (not here), so the terminology has persisted. We have a different ban, so these terms are essentially useless with respect to CA law.
            2. H2, H3, H4, etc.?
Those are buffer weights for carbines. A well-used carbine will sometimes open its gas port and need a heavier buffer to function properly. Different ammo also needs different buffer weights. This is generally for the shortest carbines, though - like the 10.5"
            3. A1, A2?
generations of the M16 - but they're often not followed properly. These are generally applied to things like the upper (A2 being a fixed carry handle, A3 or A4 a flat-top) and the stock (A2 being a larger fixed than the M16 stock)

            4. CAR, tactical, etc. (I understand the varminter one)
randomly applied terms. CAR means carbine, generally a carbine gas system with a carbine (collapsible) stock.
            Thanks in advance.

Please keep your bones for your students. Most of us are here to help each other, not toss bones about.

If I don't have anything constructive to add, I usually TRY to keep quiet. You can see that you have prompted me to break that rule.

If you play with matches long enough, you will find out that you can burn yourself. I'm just glad I had teachers that shared their knowledge AND taught self reliance.

                      You're welcome.

I'm on the verge of a $500.00 AR build ($150.00 for Lower including shipping, tax,FFL's fee & Dros is my starting point !) How would you procede from there if you were building a $500.00 AR ? (Used A1 & other milsurp parts ok)

Impossible I think. Say your lower is accounted for.
                          you have $350 left.

Say you find a SUPER deal on a complete LPK for $50

$300 left. You still need a stock, an upper and mags before you get the gun operational.

I've never in my life seen an upper for under $495
