    Scar 17 Muzzle Devices

Just wondering, is there a lot of feedback or a favorite muzzle device for S17s? Does anyone have feedback for any of the other devices? Thinking of something with a little less blast than the pws, while still retaining the same amount of muzzle control WITHOUT inducing negative muzzle flip downwards. The S17 doesn't kick too hard right now, so a little bit more recoil for the above would be fine.

Here are a few others I've seen mentioned here and there. Please confirm, deny, or add on to the below:

-BCM mod1 for 30 cal - this seems to be very popular on the fn forum. Supposedly controls recoil and muzzle rise as well as the Factory pws, but with less noise and flash.
    - lantac or surefire 308 brake - both seem to be very popular brake options. similar designs that seem like they'd both be really loud but would reduce recoil effectively, with lantac probably a little more so bc it is bigger with more vents.
    - JP 308 brake - this general design seems popular with the game gun community. somewhat similar to the above, but way bigger and supposedly way louder.
    - a flash hider (probably a prong or cage type design) - a few reports out there that the s17 doesn't kick hard and removing the brake isn't a big deal for some
-Ares armor adjustable comp - in b4 Ares sucks etc. While I'm not a fan of every single thing they've done either, I do think this is a very good idea for a comp, just don't know of anyone using these for 30 cal.
    - griffin 7.62 comp and battlecomp babc - look like somewhat similar designs, and somewhat similar to the ares adjustable, but from what i understand, they have pretty different feels/impulses.
-Factory pws- I don't think it's bad, but there seem to be many reports of products working as well as or better than the pws in every way.

    edit bc typos.

I got one of these and am happy with it.

I did not even consider taking the SCAR to the range with the PWS brake. They are overly obnoxious and ruin every body around you day at the range.

The PWS in 556 is even a handful to sit beside.

i've shot outdoors and once indoors with the PWS on the 17 before. outside it was bad true, but not AS bad as i thought it'd be. again, definitely wouldn't mind cutting the noise down some though.

the one time i shot it inside, i deliberately picked a time i knew the range would be almost empty, double up on ear pro, and waited until all but 1 person left that bay/half of the range. i then warned them that i was going to be shooting a 308 with an obnoxious brake but they said no worries. took 3 shots and asked them again are you sure? they still didn't say anything. to me from the shooter's position, it was still loud, but not anything unbearable.

The brakeout 2.0 is popular. I see more flash hiders than brakes being used over on fnforum. I just bought the griffin armament taper brake for mine. Ive seen surefires a few times. Its hard to get info about, all you really hear is that its hard to time the muzzle brakes on the small shoulder for suppressor use. That not being an issue in cali i think most are gtg. The specwar 762 brake looks great and for 75$ is an awesome deal. Seen some battlecomps, also griffin armaments flash compensator seems to be well liked as well as their full comp. I almost got the over the barrel brake by them bit decided against it just in case i ran into any issues with the shoulder. Havong so much invested in this rifle im having randall put mine on
look at www.silencershop.com for options and reviews. Personally im not a fan of the large jp or miculek style brakes especially for the scars slimmer barrel. Thats just me though.

I have read some great write ups about the brakeout 2.0 some going even as far to say that it has far less recoil than a dedicated muzzle brake, i think they named the aac amd surefire specifically which is pretty sweet considering it will perform well as a flash hider too

It would be worth looking into getting one of the oem flash hiders they came stock with for awhile. The M.i.t.e.r. style ones.

I swapped the pws for a blackout a while back.
No more blown ear drums and it looks WAY more operator.
The PWS does work very well for what it is intended to do.

The stock PWS is very effective at reducing muzzle movement but it has a really bad concussive output, especially to anyone sitting at the shooter's 8:00 and 4:00 positions.

The Battlecomp is a decent brake and is nowhere near as loud. My friend's SCAR 17 with a Battlecomp is quieter than my SCAR 16 with the stock PWS.

I went with a Vortex flash hider, it has much less blast and is more neighborly to other shooters. The recoil is more pronounced but not a big deal if you are not a sissy. Since I consider myself a sissy if I could do it over I would not get the Vortex again. If you are willing to come out to USI in Concord and don't consider yourself a sissy, you are welcome to give it a try.

thanks for the offer sammy but that's a bit far from southern CA

on a different note, it seems like there isn't a very uniform consensus here or elsewhere on the internets. nor does my wallet have the capacity to buy and try that many muzzle devices @ ~$100 each...

My griffin armament taper brake showed up today, ill keep you posted after a range report. At 100$ i think its gonna be a winner. I definitely dig the style of it as well with the thread cover. Definitely shorter than the pws style as well.
