I recently picked up a couple uppers, both 5.56, that I'll be testing when I go down to Panoche next weekend. I don't plan on doing any formal testing, but I'd like to see what kind of groups they're capable of. One's 18" 1/8 Wylde, the other 16" 1/7 5.56. I'd rather not spend absurd amounts of money...

Wolf or Tula
Seriously, if it's important to you spend the money on a good quality match ammunition.Check back later for a witty comment.Comment

Then you'd rather not have ammo that you know will do what it takes.....right ?
Start with Black Hills 77 grain OTM match with the Sierra Match King (smk)bullets.
It's also known as MK262 by our military.
It's about $1.00-1.25 a round *IF* you can find it.Comment

Try some Hornady steel case match, it's around $20 for 50 rounds. It has been very accurate in my experience.
Also Hornady V max 55gr has always grouped well for me, sub MOA.Comment

Black Hills or FGMM

You aren't going to beat those 2. They are the standard for a reason. Gatta pay to play.Comment

I don't reload for most of my semi 5.56 rifles and have experimented quite a bit on what works best in the "inexpensive but not bulk" type. The ammo that does best for me and doesn't cost alot is Fiocchi poly tipped in 40 grain or 50 grain. I believe the 40 grain is a Nosler and the 50 a Hornady bullet. These shoot very well in everything from a plain old AR and Robinson 96, to an Accuracy Systems reworked Mini 14 and a Volquartsen Evolution.I recently picked up a couple uppers, both 5.56, that I'll be testing when I go down to Panoche next weekend. Cost is about $21.00 per 50 rounds, Sportmans Warehouse usually has it. I've found the 40 grain at gun shows for about $18.00.GOA Member & SAF Life MemberComment

Another vote for Fiocchi, my AR has a 16" 1:9 twist barrel (Windham Weaponry MPC CA) and it seems to like Fiocchi ammo a lot. I tried their .223rem 55gr last week with pretty good result (for me). $17.99 per 50 from Cabelas.com.
There is also a .223rem 69gr match grade Fiocchi from sgammo.com, a little more expensive; $16.50 per 20 if you buy 10 boxes or more.Comment

I'll just shoot my typical M193(too poor to shoot match), since that is all I stocked up on. As long as I can hit a steel target at 600, I'm happy.Comment
