    Help on this rifle

    Hi All

I'm not sure if this is the correct page to post this. If not, please direct me to the correct one and I apologize for the mistake.

I have recently diverted my hobby from modifying cars to target shooting.

I already got my first handgun and now I have been looking for a rifle.

Someone in the military service has taken interest in my wheels worth $4000 new and he would like to trade below rifle. I need to know how much they are worth recently and if this is a great deal.

"JD lower with CMMG trigger assembly , guntec quad free float rail and upper. Barrel is 5.56 NATO 1/9 twist. Also have three 30 round magazines"

As this is my very first rifle trade, what are the things I should ask the owner about the rifle and what should I inspect or look for when we do the trade.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

To be honest I cannot think of very many AR-15 rifles that cost $4000 for starters so there is that. And second 30 round mags are not legal in this state unless they were purchased before the 10 round law in California was passed.

To get a true number for the rifles worth you would need a detailed list of parts so that can be difficult . But hey if you cannot sell the wheels and want a rifle you have a guy with a trade at least

Also the sale of 30 round mags is prohibited by law. And as of January 2014, it is illegal to even sell them if they are disassembled. There is a mountain of gun legislation each year and it can be hard to keep up with. Try and research this before you take your ar-15 to a gun range with out a bullet button and a 30 round mag. You don't want to unknowingly commit a felony.

The rifle itself is at least 4X past any somewhat reasonable pricing.

Heed the advise as to normal capacity magazines.

If he tossed in 5 more rifles, or 10,000 rounds of ammo, then perhaps the $4000 is worth the trade. Otherwise...no.

Cannot trade, give, sell, or acquire in any manner, the magazines. So count them out. Period.

At best, that rifle is worth (brand spanking new), about $1100, tops.

Thank you very much for the prompt advises.

I myself is having second thoughts on getting a used rifle I have no idea what it is.

I will probably just pass on this deal and stick on my handgun for now until I get more familiar in the long gun.

Franken-gun = $500 no matter the parts involved in the making.
The thing is, you have no certainty of it even working correctly, or safely, and never could be sure of it being 100% reliable when you need a gun to be there and 100% reliable.

Sell the wheels as wheels, for cash.
Go spend the cash on a new, unused, off the shelf gun, rifle, pistol, bow and arrow. bb gun, slingshot....whatever.

+1 You don't have enough experience yet to assess what is being offered...or know if you even like the parts that were used on the gun. Plus it sounds like it's what we call a "Frankengun" and who knows how it was built.

For reference, you can get into a top tier rifle...Colt 6920, BCM, Daniel Defense for between $1050 and $1600 give or take. That's a rifle that 99% of folks would be ecstatic to own and will serve you well for a lifetime...and can be handed down to your kids if well cared for.

And for $4000, you can buy a lot of ammo, accessories and training for that top tier rifle...or buy a second rifle.

Sell the car and get the cash out. Then come back and we'll help you spend it without getting taken.

I'll add to the chorus, do yourself a favor and trade money for your car. That way you can buy the exact rifle you want and have a ton of $ left over for ammo of maybe more guns.

Sell the wheels, spend the scratch on a decent (new) rifle or two, and spend the rest on ammo!
