    USMC SAM-R(-ish) Tribute Build

I FINALLY got this dang thing finished, and boy, am I happy!

I really don't want to go into the cost, because I might cry, but hey, at least the pain was spread out over a long period of time, LOL.

I've really admired the USMC SAM-R since I first saw pictures of them. I don't know what it is about them, but they're just sexy ugly to me. So when I decided I wanted to build a more sharpshooting-friendly bench AR, compared to my BCM-based "battle rifle", I thought it seemed like a good model to emulate.

Here are the parts and components that went into it:

    UPPER:
    • VLT0R MUR upper receiver
    • BCM 20" SS410 SAM-R barrel
    • DPMS A2 birdcage flash hider (it's not fully tightened down in the photos, so ignore that it's not on straight... it will beThis was the longest stumbling block to completion... I spent way to much on this, but I couldn't see something as a proper SAM-R clone without the defining feature)
    • ARMS folding front sight/gas block (This was as close as I could get to the actual (discontinued) KAC folding sight... I had a chance or two to grab them from Operation Parts, but I just couldn't being myself to spend nearly $500 on the KAC front sight)
    • Magpul Gen2 MBUS Rear flip sight (I skipped the KAC rear sight here simply because I don't care for it)

    LOWER:
    • Mega Lower (forged)
    • Rock River Arms lower parts kit
    • Rock River Arms Ambi Safety
    • ALG Defense Combat Trigger ACT
    • Raddlock Maglock Gen-XT bullet button
    • Magpul MIAD Basic grip
    • Magpul ACS-L Stock (I dislike fixed stocks, so I diverged from the original here... obviously an easy decision to reverse if I ever wanted

    ACCESSORIES:
    • Nikon Buckmaster BDC 3-9x40 scope
    • Butler Creek flip open scope covers
    • Burris AR-PEPR QD Scope Mount
    • Harris Bipod 1A2-BRM (6-9")
    • GG&T Quick-Release Bipod Adapter

Tip o'the hat to Randall (AR15 Barrels) who helped make sure the upper was perfectly assembled (and for his KAC-specific handguard attachment tool!).

Just for comparison, here are a couple shots of the real deal, collected from the 'net, which I used for reference:

    ... and here she is:

If the name weren't taken, I'd call her Vera.

I need to do a proper photo shoot at some point, but I was too excited to get something up, and ran short of time.

Now if only I had time to get to the range and put her through her paces...

That's a pretty sweet build yo. I had actually not ever heard of the SAM-R rifle before. I guess sort of similar to the Navy's MK 12 SPR?

        Exactly.

SAM-R = Squad Advanced Marksman Rifle

LOL yeah, it's kinda screaming for a road trip to AZ or NV, isn't it?

Although, for sharpshooting purposes, mag dumps and fast changes aren't super common (especially for a civilian like myself!), so I'll have to live with the BB.

Looks great, congrats on finishing the build. Let's see some groups once you get her out to the range.

              I'm sure it'll be a while before I can out-shoot this rifle.

And about a month before I can scare up a free weekend to hit the range.

              ...but I can't wait!

                Looks good!

Where did you get the KAC FF RAS from? I've been looking everywhere for one.

Operation Parts. Took FOREVER for them to get one in stock... and took TWO cracks at it before they got one in stock, and I was able to grab it before someone else did! I've had this rifle planned for over a year (made the decision and bought the SS 20" barrel about a year ago). I had almost every part within a couple of months except than damn rail.

Find the rail at OP, and sign up for email notifications for when it's back in stock. And then be patient... and more importantly, when the notification finally comes in, be FAST!

                  EDIT: Here's the link: http://www.operationparts.com/Produc...ductCode=21318

Hopefully, you know a gunsmith or someone with the tool to install it, too, because it needs a special installation tool (which is over $200!).
